Patient, Heal Thyself: A Remarkable Health Program Combining Ancient Wisdom with Groundbreaking Clinical Research

Nutrition for the 21st century.......but to a point.

I have both positive and unfortunately not so positive things to say about Jordan's book. First, I will start with the positive. Jordan has hit the nail right on the head when it comes to our modern diets. We have all been bombarded by politically correct nutrition for many years and Jordan tells us that it's time to get back to a more "primitive" way of eating. That is, if we want to regain our health. The fact is, our ancestors were much healthier and happier than we are today. They also instinctively knew how to properly prepare foods for optimal digestion and health. Jordan tells us that the foods we have been misled to believe are healthy for us are the REAL culprits in keeping us sick. He provides real concrete information and references to back them up. He teaches us about the REAL health foods that until recently, have gone much unnoticed. I believe that you will be pleasantly surprised as to which foods Jordan explains are actually healthy for us. He also talks about ancient techniques for preserving foods that may be the key for keeping our intestinal tracts and our entire bodies free from disease and infection plus much much more. And of course, he tells us of his miraculous healing from stage 4 crohns-colitis, and how he did it with the help of whole foods and whole food supplements. I highly recommend that you pick up this book as the nutrition discussion is far too important to pass up on. Now, on to the negative....Jordan is the president of a nutrition company called Garden Of Life. He started this company as a vehicle to help others in the ways he has come to believe in---ancient wisdom of whole foods and preparation methods. What is so bad about that you may ask? Well, he devotes many chapters of his book to reviewing practically his entire line of nutritional supplements and explaining how they can improve our health. Now, that's fine and all, but the real problem lies in the fact that these supplements, the way he suggests using them, are practically impossible to afford for the average person. See, throughout the book, he explains how whole food supplements are superior to isolated vitamin pills (which I agree) and that the nutrients in his whole food supplements are largely missing from our modern diets. Again, that's fine. But financially, this program is impossible for most. Let me give you an example. He has a large section in his book that covers an eating program and supplement program for over 100 different conditions. He recommends specific foods and supplements for each condition. Again, that is great! However, using his supplements, the way he suggests, the average "therapeutic" supplement program would cost,....are you ready?......over $500 per month and that's only using 7 of the 17 different supplements his company markets. If you chose simply to do the "maintaince" protocol, you'd only be spending,..gee...a low $200 per month. Those numbers will be even higher for most people because I am using the best prices I could find. Through some retailers, that therapeutic program could cost you over $1000 dollars. So, overall, the book is worth reading because the nutritional information really is accurate, in-depth, and dispels many myths about proper eating. However, the supplement program is best taken with a grain of salt (soley due to the cost). My advice is to maybe pick 1 or 2 formulas that may suit your needs the best. I'm sure Garden Of Life would just love it if we were all using their entire supplement line but some of us actually have mortgages and schools to pay for. The supplements ARE top notch and are among the best I have ever seen, but there is a big price to pay for all of the great care and thought that went into making them. If they were more affordable, I would highly encourage everyone to use them. That is my review.

Dirt Is Good To Eat?

I would have never guessed what probiotics was about and how this poor sickly man turned into the handsome young man on the cover. The authors story is really moving. He was an ordinary healthy college student and suddenly his health went down wind, way down wind. His dad didn't give up and kept helping find the solution. One precursor trouble mentioned was taking antibiotics and eating fast food, and it was ah, I've had my share while growing up and my parents would take the family out once a week to eat out as part of our budgeted entertainment, and sometimes we'd opt for fast food. Well, the author became a medical doctor who's one of the rare ones that knows well that nutritional healing is real or the ruth ones that know it's real but don't want to loose making loads of money on patients that discover cures to expensive problems. Following his advice has helped me continue to improve my health. I think I had a slight cold a few years ago, but I think I haven't even had a flu for over a decade. I might have a brief sniffle, or an occasional sneeze, but truly I went through the full fledged program and now it's like when will I ever get sick enough to need antibiotics again. This summer, I did somehow get a urinary tract infection and I think a couple of other non-sexually transmitted infections, and followed the doctors advice to take a couple of antibiotics which quickly alleviated the trouble. Afterwards though, I knew what to do to boost my immunity with probiotics again. Don't try this if you don't travel much and eat foreign produce, but I even went to Mexico on a missionary trip and I was the only one to order a big salad at a fine rustic Mexican style restaurant. Many seemed to look at me with a bit of anxiety, like "you're really going to eat that?" I sure did, and came back with no Montezumas revenge. I figured I could get away with it, especially, since I've lived in Mexico for 10 years and would follow orders to wash my veggies in iodine and so I could enjoy my fresh veggies, too. Others that strictly followed the tourist recommendations with "dead food" or would constantly run to the border, could have big troubles. Down there, I had my troubles but reading things like this and respecting the local doctors advice to let my body do the healing with homoepathic medicine and nutritional healing, just kept on improving me, instead of breaking me down. It's like other medicine is more like a band aid over a wound with stitches that has trouble healing. This enables our bodies themselves to take charge, God willing.

Amazing Book!

He explains the unexplained in simple understandable ways. Not only was I able to get my health back I was able to stop being afraid and upset by my health issue. Being patient and allowing the body to heal with the proper nutrition, springs of life, perfect food, MSM+ vit. C, etc... I feel happier and healthier than ever without having to take prescription drugs or treatments. Believe in yourself! You can do it!

The Road to Real Health - But Hard to Follow

As the previous reviewers have mentioned, Jason's story of being near death and finding no, or unsatisfactory, answers in either the world of conventional or alternative medicine and his transition to strong and vibrant health is an interesting and well-described saga. He spent over $150,000 and several years seeking the right care, the right doctor/treatment, even the right country trying to get well. Slowly he recovered after a painful and often frustrating and exasperating trial and error process. What he has found is that modern man has much to learn from early - specifically Biblical - man and the things he consumed. When one looks at the rate of disease, misery and suffering brought on by the current SAD (standard American diet) style of eating, it is obvious we are doing something (BIG!) wrong. Some of Jason's ideas are commonsense, some startling to our way of thinking, but they are definitely worth considering! Regarding the supplementation suggested - these appear to be high quality, but the price is also high as well. To include even a few supplements on a daily basis would put quite a dent in most budgets, but then - "what price health?" Also, the suggestions for goats milk, etc., also present a problem for many - how/where to get it in many places, etc. Overall, this is a very interesting and different approach. I believe the author is very sincere, but it is almost "too" revolutionary for the average person. Even if one could easily afford the supplements recommended, some of the other suggestions and changes would be hard for the Big Mac or Whopper lover to stick with. Still... it is obvious much is wrong with how most of us have grown up and continue to eat - and the price we are paying with our health is VERY high. As for me - I am glad I read this book. I learned a lot, have been challenged into making some of the changes, and picked up my first bottle of "Primal Defense" a nearby health food store today.
