The previous edition was published in 2005. Purpose: It is intended to assist students improve their communication skills when they speak to patients. Conversations with patients can be extremely sensitive, and this book provides readers with the communication tools necessary to appropriately engage in these types of conversations. Audience: The book is written primarily for healthcare students, but some practitioners may find it helpful as well. The author is unquestionably an expert in the field. Features: This edition specifically addresses the frustration of how to help Millennial or Generation Y students (many of whom devote much of their day interacting with electronic devices instead of socializing with people) develop better communication skills. The early chapters assist readers in developing self-awareness and developing and differentiating their values from professional values. Ethical and moral aspects of care are explored, as is diversity. Virtues of empathy, sympathy, and care ethics are also explored. The remaining chapters teach actual skill development. This book tackles the difficult topics related to the affective domain, which is an essential part of successful practice in healthcare. Although the reason is not clear, such issues are often minimized in professional education. One explanation is that expertise is generally not available, and the comfort level among faculty in dealing with these topics is low. This text minimizes the uncertainty of teaching these subjects using an interactive style and including participatory exercises in each chapter. Reminiscent of a psychology self-help book, students can explore their own values, awareness, and communication style in relation to working with patients. The exercises are probably most beneficial if accompanied by group discussion (such as a classroom) but the organization of the chapters is such that the practicing clinician will also benefit greatly from the content. Additions to the third edition are positive and timely. Topics such as interviewing and patient education fit into the current focus on patient responsibility. Patient satisfaction is positively influenced by communication skills in a variety of situations, recognition of health behavior, and personal interaction as described in several chapters. The chapters do flow nicely, but it would be possible to use them independently and at different levels in a curriculum. The content of this text is used in practice more consistently than any other technique or modality, but the number of references on these topics is very limited. The skills presented here are those that probably should be reviewed by practitioners on an annual basis as an ethical awareness refresher course. Given the ease of applying theinformation presented, this book could benefit all those who interact with patients.
New edition of a guide to aid in the professional socialization of the medical practitioner, with a view towards developing the ability to feel confidence and empathy and therefore be better equipped to aid in the patient's healing process. The book opens with a section on self awareness which discusses family dynamics, health professional's self-esteem, values as determinants of behavior, and identifying and resolving moral dilemmas. The bulk of the volume is then devoted to interactions with patients, including chapters on the nature of effective helping and effective communication, assertiveness skills, communicating to establish rapport, cultural sensitivity, health behavior and patient education, communicating with persons who have disabilities, communicating with the dying and their families, and stress management. Meet the Author
Carol M. Davis, DPT, EdD, MS, FAPTA, is Professor Emerita of the Department of Physical Therapy in the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami and immediate past Vice Chair for Curriculum. Dr. Davis is an internationally known speaker and consultant in teaching and developing curriculum in professional behaviors, attitudes, and values and in complementary therapies in rehabilitation for physicians and all health professionals. In addition to being the author of Patient Practitioner Interaction: An Experiential Manual for Developing the Art of Health Care, Fifth Edition, she is the editor of Complementary Therapies in Rehabilitation: Evidence for Efficacy in Therapy, Prevention, and Wellness, Third Edition, also published by SLACK Incorporated, and co-editor of Therapeutic Interaction in Nursing.
Dr. Davis continues to teach doctor of physical therapy (DPT) students at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She has published several research articles in peer-reviewed journals and is the author of 18 book chapters. She served 6 years as a commissioner on the Commission on Accreditation for Physical Therapy Education and was a team leader and site visitor. She also served on the Ethics and Judicial Committee for the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and was Chair in 2004–2005. She was awarded the Outstanding Teacher award by the Section on Geriatrics of the APTA in 2003, was named the 2005 Linda Crane Lecturer by the Sections on Cardiovascular and Pulmonary and Education, and was awarded the Lucy Blair Service Award in 1991 and the Catherine Worthingham Fellow award in 2003 by the APTA.
In addition to teaching and consulting, Dr. Davis maintains an active clinical practice, primarily treating patients with pain using energy-based myofascial release and exercise.
