Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Open House at Pleasant Valley Elementary School will be on Friday. Volunteer Patsy feels that she must teach the rude children of Ms. Klingensmith's first grade some manners by then to avoid disaster. All week long she demonstrates, then tries to make them practice proper behavior. And all week the kids behave like kids, providing chuckles for the reader but exhaustion and despair for Patsy. The pleasant surprise on Friday is that the class really has learned enough to turn the Open House into a great success. In detailed colored drawings beginning with the jacket cover, we see poor Patsy surrounded by the children acting out the "don't's" as she tries to show the "do's," until the last few pages of miraculous transformation. Anthropomorphism works here as cats, dogs, and monkeys are really youngsters and parents, while Patsy is a pig to rival Miss Piggy herself. The endpapers contain Athena's report about the Open House, written on lined paper in flawless child-like prose. A sugar-coated lesson in good behavior as well as a fun-filled story. 2001, Atheneum Books for Young Readers/Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Division, $16.00. Ages 5 to 8. K-Gr 2-A return visit to Pleasantville Elementary School. It is five days before Open House, and Ms. Klingensmith's first graders need some instruction on conduct and behavior. Patsy Pig volunteers to educate the raucous group and, needless to say, things don't run smoothly. The lesson on meeting and greeting is somewhat lost on the kids, as is serving refreshments and making pleasant conversation with adults. The action dramatically changes when Patsy yells, "I GIVE UP. I QUIT!" That scene alone is worth the price of the book. While she cools down, Ms. Klingensmith asks her students to write about what they have learned about manners over the past week. Readers will feel the anticipation as the parents file in for Open House; Patsy covers her eyes with her hooves, waiting for it all to fall apart. Of course the children are marvelous; Principal Sterling recognizes Patsy's wonderful job, and everyone claps. Tryon wraps it all up with a praising note from Patsy to her new "little angels." The pen-and-ink with watercolor illustrations of the assorted animal characters and their reactions to the lessons are clever and amusing. The text appears in different sizes, adding variety to the layout. Once again, Tryon has created a bright, lively, and amusing tale. Pitch this one to teachers, and whip it out when your kindergartners and first graders come to visit.-Meghan R. Malone, Turner Free Library, Randolph, MA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Meet the Author

Leslie Tryon has written eleven books set in Pleasant Valley, beginning with the widely acclaimed Albert books, and now moving the focus to the indomitable, bossy, highly organized, and in her own way loveable Patsy Pig. Leslie lives in Carmel Valley, California, with her husband, their cats, and a tarantula that occasionally wanders through the backyard. Besides writing and illustrating books, Ms. Tryon volunteers each week in an elementary school remarkably like the one in this book.
