Children's LiteratureThe author is a teacher who wrote this book to use in the classroom. It is an excellent tool for encouraging kids to become aware of patterns, or rhythms. In a back section titled "About Patterns," the author and illustrator show clearly the various patterns used in the book. The reader is encouraged to hear, as well as see, the patterns. The simple AB pattern is used in the beginning, featuring a fish that is "yellowblack, yellowblack, yellowblack." In addition, the frame around the first spread repeats two colors in an AB pattern. The "chompchompmunchmunch" of the sea horse eating seaweed for lunch is an AABB pattern as is the frame around the illustration. The amusing illustrations of the various sea creatures, including a smiling octopus moving along with a "stretchspurtglide" and a jellyfish maneuvering through the waves with a "wigglejigglejigglefloat" will, along with the rhythmic text, make this book popular with young learners. 2000, The Millbrook Press, Ages 3 to 6, $20.90. School Library Journal - School Library JournalPreS-Gr 1-Although there's not much of a story line in this appealing concept book, there is definitely more here than initially meets the eye. The rhyming prose and brightly colored cartoon fish inhabit a world of patterns, beginning with the simplest AB pattern and growing increasingly complex. Upon closer inspection, the patterns can be seen echoing throughout, as pictures both express and reinforce the pattern of the words. For example, the ABB pattern introduced by an eel is echoed not only on the creature's body (stripe-dot-dot), but also in the bubbles that issue from its mouth (large-small-small), the underwater reeds (short-tall-tall) and plants (curve-star-star), and borders of the page (yellow-red-red). Once children get the idea, they will enjoy discovering the repetition and looking for examples. A clear and effective teaching tool.-Robin L. A fun book to read aloud to children. They love the catchy rhythm. The artwork is perfect.
As a teacher, I know how important pattern comprehension is, but it's not the easiest thing to teach. This book has been wonderful. My students love the funny, surprising ending, and I love how easily it teaches important patterning principles. Thank you Ms. Harris and Ms. Green!
