I bought this book as I was taking an Astronomy class and wanted a book that would: 1. Help me as a lay person better identify stars and constellations and 2. Get some historical background (ie, "the story") behind the constellations. The book was quite successful on both of those fronts. Organized chronologically (by season), the book gives you a sampling of many major constellations you could see, without information overload. Similarly, on giving some historical or mythological background to the constellations, the book gave some of the major tales, while acknowledging that there are rival stories which aren't mentioned in the book for brevity sake. Overall, the books gives a beginner just enough without overwhelming the reader. If you are doing research or a "professional" stargazer, you will probably find this book a bit too concise, however and would want something a bit more comprehensive and detailed. But if you are interested in looking up at night and getting a simple and effective understanding of what you are looking at, I think this book is an enjoyable and superb start!
