...Kellogg dedicates his own substantial talent to enhancing Paul's already sizable reputation. He amply succeeds.
Children's Literature
This tall tale was first retold and illustrated by Steven Kellogg in 1984 and is now being reissued in paperback. Just as the story of the huge man and his huge blue ox lives on, so do Kellogg's illustrations. Paul Bunyan and Babe are both wide-eyed and innocent, but Paul is always using his amazing powers to solve problems and help folks. In this particular version, he uses his ax to carve the Grand Canyon and fed flapjacks and syrup to the men who leveled the Great Plains and shaved the slopes of the Rocky Mountains. The pages are crowded with fun and humor—Paul holding a watermelon as if it were an orange, a line at the outhouse (the gentlemen's outhouse!), a library in a pioneer town, and wonderfully expressive faces for pioneers and ogres alike. Kellogg's retelling provides a marvelous way to share tall tales with short people and encourage youngsters to create their own legendary characters. 2004 (orig. 1984), HarperTrophy, Ages 4 to 8.

We need more stories like this! This wonderfully illustrated version of the classic story is loads of fun for your kids. It combines the tallest of tales with pictures you kids can look at for hours. It's almost like a Seek and Find book and the detail is incredible. Paul and Blue romp through early America and with their outrageous antics, inadvertantly create the Great Lakes and the Grand Canyon. It's an adorable introduction for young children to the exploration of the west and the geography of North America.

PAUL BUNYAN! A LOVABLE CHARACTER FULL OF FUN AND EVERYTHING LARGER THAN LIFE! MY SON DID A WONDERFUL JOB ON HIS 4TH GRADE BOOK REPORT WITH THIS BOOK. HIS PROJECT OF A LIFE-SIZED (MY SON'S SIZE) PAUL BUNYAN CAME OUT GREAT COMPLETE WITH A RED CHECKED SHIRT, BOOTS AND CURLY BEARD. HE ESPECIALLY LIKED THE WAY BABE, THE BLUE OX, NEVER LOST HIS COLOR EVEN AFTER HE WARMED UP FROM BEING IN THE BLIZZARD. HE NOW UNDERSTANDS WHAT A FOLKTALE MEANS AND IS EXCITED ABOUT READING MORE. LOOKING AT PANCAKES MADE ON A GRIDDLE THAT WAS GREASED BY LITTLE MEN WITH BACON TIED ONTO THE BOTTOM OF THEIR FEET WAS ESPECIALLY FUNNY. AND THE WAY THE MEN TOOK A BALLOON UP TO THEIR BUNKS AND A PARACHUTE DOWN WAS ONE OF HIS FAVORITE PARTS. TAKING A PINE TREE TO COMB HIS BEARD MADE HIM SMILE. WHAT A CONCEPT! GREAT FUN EASY TO READ BOOK!
