Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Maggie Chase
Bookended at the front and the back with a personal introduction and afterword by the author, this is a succinct, compelling, easy-to-read picture book biography of an amazing man. Paul Robeson was born to parents whose complex lives of struggle and hardship are only hinted at in this account, but his incredible intelligence, multiple talents, and passion for living a deeply meaningful, purposeful life shine through clearly. The astute, curious reader will find plenty here to launch further investigation into this man's life, whether it be to probe into the abuse and racism he suffered, or to research his vocal music and acting roles. Through Greenfield's description, we get a strong sense of Robeson's character, integrity, compassion and willpower—so much contained in one human being, and a powerful role model for all of us. Reviewer: Maggie Chase
School Library Journal

Gr 2-5

The legendary activist, singer, and actor receives a fitting update to Greenfield's stirring 1975 biography (HarperCollins, o.p.). From his father's escape from slavery to Robeson's rise in celebrity and stature, the purposeful text highlights the monumental influences on this man's multifaceted life. Robeson's outcry against racism abroad and his subsequent struggle under McCarthyism reveal the tumultuous conditions during the Civil Rights Movement. Succinct phrases depict the public's faltering opinion of Robeson's controversial beliefs and his perseverance in the face of adversity. Vibrant, monochromatic acrylic illustrations from the original edition use shading and depth to convey tremendous emotion. Powerful movements and vivid expressions enhance the narrative. Against a rich, cream background, fluid lines convey a bold intensity. An updated afterword describes the activist's numerous posthumous accolades, including his Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. This book offers a fully developed portrayal of the man.-Meg Smith, Cumberland County Public Library, Fayetteville, NC

A brief synopsis of Paul Robeson's life - born 9 April 1898 - is provided on the inside front cover and it is enlightening and educational. This book would be a good reference for a biographical study of Paul Robeson and could be used for an oral book report. The illustrations in the book are expressive and enhance the reader's enjoyment of this story. A quote from the book, that should inspire readers and encourage them to aspire to seek their goal(s) and their passion in life, "He learned that people should do the things they really believe in. " Some key points: *he wanted to be a lawyer; *he started a newspaper titled "Freedom"; *he traveled in the U.S.A. and abroad; *U.S.A.' s government barred Paul Robeson from traveling outside of the U.S.A. and told him to stop talking about improving conditions for people in the U.S.A. and in other countries; * after 8 years of court appearances, in 1958, Paul won the right to travel abroad again; *Paul wrote a book titled "Here I Stand"; Paul died on 23 January 1976, after his health began to change in 1959; and *Paul was remembered with a U.S. Postal Service stamp in 2004. You may read about these facts and may other interesting events in Paul's life in this book. **Great for educational and after-school learning.
