Barnes & Noble - Bill Crandall
From their disgustingly cute novelty hit "Barbie Girl," you wouldn't expect Denmark's Aqua to trade verses with the world's most famous tenor -- which they do on a rousing rendition of the popular Italian song "Funiculi, Funicula" -- but then good causes create strange bedfellows. On June 6, 2000, to benefit the children of the war-torn nations of Cambodia and Tibet, Luciano Pavarotti invited pop stars from across the globe to perform with him in his hometown of Modena, Italy. On June 6, 2000, to benefit the children of the war-torn nations of Cambodia and Tibet, Luciano Pavarotti invited pop stars from across the globe to perform with him in his hometown of Modena, Italy. Pavarotti & Friends for Cambodia and Tibet brings these performances to your living room. Some pop stars showed up and did their own thing; George Michael and Tracy Chapman are captured here doing fine renditions of "Brother Can You Spare a Dime" and "Telling Stories," from their respective most recent albums. However, this collection is memorable for those artists who dared to sing along with the jolly tenor. Aussie rockers Savage Garden actually pull their weight on "O Sole Mio," while Enrique Iglesias, Pavarotti, and a children's choir find a common language on "Cielito Lindo" as if there were any doubt, the crowd's manic screams for the Latin heartthrob let you know who's singing. The grand finale lives up to the event's magnanimity and magnitude, with everybody, led by the Eurythmics' Annie Lennox, singing the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love," "We Are the World"-style.
All Music Guide - Adam Greenberg
Another recording from Pavarotti's Modena series of annual concerts benefiting children of a given location. This one had proceeds going to Cambodia and Tibet. A multitude of pop stars (both American-European and purely Italian) showed up for the effort. As with other installments of the series. Enrique Iglesias truly stands out for his assist in "Cielito Lindo," admittedly not exactly classical, but given the orchestration that was added in, it became a tour de force for both Pavarotti and Iglesias. Tracy Chapman's contribution is noteworthy, as well.

    Reliving the magic

I was fortunate enough to get to see this concert live this summer while I had the opportunity of a lifetime to study abroad in Firenze, Italia. Not only was it an amazing group of performers, but it was an event I can't wait to relive over and over with a copy of the concert- not to mention that this concert is for such a wonderful cause!!! I highly recommend you get your own copy!
