Overview

Izzy McHale wants her new Trendy Tails Pet Boutique in Merryville, Minnesota, to be the height of canine couture and feline fashions. But at the store’s opening, it turns out it’s a human who’s dressed to kill…

Izzy’s own beloved pets are dressed to the nines for the grand opening of Trendy Tails. Feisty feline Jinx is large and in charge, and happy mutt Packer is lapping up the attention. Izzy and her best friend Rena have their hands full meeting Merryville’s menagerie and serving tasty pupcakes and kitty canapes from their “barkery.” The last thing they need is the town’s local activist, Sherry Harper, scaring off customers and getting tongues wagging by picketing the event.

The two manage to stop Sherry’s protest in its tracks, but the trouble for Trendy Tails is just beginning. Sherry is found murdered in back of the shop, and Rena is immediately named as the lead suspect. Now Izzy and her furry friends have a new pet project—collaring a killer.

Meet the Author

Annie Knox doesn't commit—or solve—murders in her real life, but her passion for animals is 100% true. She's also a devotee of 80s music, Asian horror films, and reality TV. While Annie is a native Buckeye and has called a half dozen states "home," she and her husband now live a stone's throw from the courthouse square in a north Texas town, in their very own crumbling historic house.

In Merryville, Minnesota,  Izzy is opening her Trendy Tails Pet

In Merryville, Minnesota,  Izzy is opening her Trendy Tails Pet Botique.  Though Izzy majored in fashion for adults, her pet fashions are cute and practical in the cold Minnesota weather.  Unfortunately, the town's environmentally, eccentric, perpetual protester, Sherry, has decided that animals should not wear clothes, and spends the opening day protesting in front of the store.  Unfortunate for Sherry, she's found dead behind the store on the same day.  Solving the murder sends Izzy throughout the town finding clues to keep her best friend out of the policeman's sight as the number one suspect.

Love all the characters in this book, including a group of personable dogs, a bossy cat, a sneaky guinea pig, and a thieving ferret.  The friendship between the three main human characters is different and done really well too. They were best friends through their teen years, then circumstances separated them for a number of years.  Solving this murder brought back good and difficult memories that added a lot to the story.  The mystery had me stumped, bringing me in as more and more clues were revealed.  Definitely looking forward to reading more in this new Pet Boutique Mystery.

First book of the Pet Boutique series which is sure to score big!  It has everything one looks for in a cozy, a charming heroine with a love interest and loveable pets, a quirky supporting cast of characters, a super cute business, and an interesting village where who knows what will happen next!  I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one.

Also check out her Ice Cream Shop mysteries under the name of Wendy Watson.

    Dollycas’s Thoughts

This story was a fun start to the Pet Boutique Mystery series. We have tried costumes on our pets over the years. None of them were ever too happy about it but it is a very cute idea and practical for those pets that venture outdoors in the cold winter months.

I enjoyed the way the author tied the story to my home state of Wisconsin too, with a dog named Packer, and characters that went to college or moved from Madison.

All he characters both two legged and four legged were introduced to us quite well in this first installment. I have a soft spot for Aunt Dolly, of course, us Dolly’s need to stick together. I love the way she supports Izzy both with helping her open Trendy Tails and in any other way she can. She even dons 4 inch platform sandals and “dresses up” to catch the eye of a crotchety store owner trying to make trouble for Izzy. Aunt Dolly is a hoot!!

Izzy is a strong protagonist too. Her life was turned upside down by a man. They had their whole future planned but just when they were supposed to be a making the move to New York, he changed his plans and left her behind and took another woman with him! She had to pick herself up, dust herself off and get on with her life. She does that with Trendy Tails. At least she was in her hometown surrounded by friends and family. Going into business with her best friend Rena was the perfect choice. Hopefully she can patch thing up with her old friend Sean too. Their friendship had added rather abruptly but now that they are both back in Merryville she are going to constantly bumping into each other.

There are many more interesting characters who reside in Merryville. It is one of those small towns where everyone knows everyone or they have heard gossip about each other. A perfect setting for this cozy mystery series.

I did see the writing on the wall a bit before the guilty party was revealed, but this still a wonderful mystery. I enjoyed the story so much I have already started reading Groomed For Murder. It hits store shelves next week!

    Charming Read, Rich New Series

Opening a pet boutique may sound like a risky business, but for author Annie Knox it’s a successful move for a new cozy murder mystery series. PAWS FOR MURDER is the first installment in Knox’s delightful new Pet Boutique Mystery series. It’s a refreshing take on murder, mystery and pet owners’ devotion. Izzy Hale and her best friend Rena are busy getting ready for the grand opening of Izzy’s pet boutique, Trendy Tails. The last thing Izzy needs is Sherry Harper, the town’s local activist, picketing the event. They manage to stop Sherry from protesting. However, the trouble really begins when Sherry is found murdered in the alley behind the shop and Rena becomes the prime suspect. It’s up to Izzy and her beloved pets, Jinx the large cat and Packer the happy mutt, to find the real killer before Rena is collared for the murder. Knox has created a core of characters, along with her perky protagonist, that are down-to-earth, a bit zany and extremely likable. The way in which the characters interact draws you into their lives and the drama of small town Merryville. The story, moving at a steady pace, offers more than just a murder to solve. It features business-related issues, relationship problems, and how pets influence daily lives. There are ins and outs along the way to add to the intrigue. PAWS FOR MURDER is a charming read and a enchanting start to a rich new series. You don’t have to be an animal lover to enjoy this amusing read. FTC Full Disclosure - This book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

    Awesome New Series!
This is a wonderful start to a new series. Once I started reading this book I couldn’t not put it down until I finished. I love the characters in this book including the pets. I love Izzy’s pets goofy Packer, and feisty cat Jinx, I also loved the klepto ferret. Reading this book made me feel like I was a part of the town Merryville. Izzy is opening a pet boutique and on the grand opening celebration a murder occurs. It is up to Izzy and her friends to solve the case. This book kept me guessing till the very end. I loved the ending, and was pleasantly surprised who the killer was. If you love a good mystery with some loveable animals then this book is for you. I can’t wait until the next book in this series comes out!
A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

Paws For Murder is the first book in the A Pet Boutique Mystery

Paws For Murder is the first book in the A Pet Boutique Mystery series.

I love pet related mysteries and this a great beginning for a new series.

Izzy McHale is putting the final touches for the opening of her pet boutique, Trendy Tails. Izzy designs and makes clothes for pets and her best friend Rena bakes wonderful treats for pet crowd. As they get ready to open the doors for a grand opening party, Sherry Harper, begins to picket in front of the store. Sherry has many causes for which she pickets, but the picketing in the last thing Izzy needs as she starts her new business. As the party is wrapping up and things being cleaned up, Izzy takes the trash to dumpster in back and discovers the lifeless body of Sherry. When it is learned that Rena had left the store about the time Sherry was killed, she becomes a prime suspect. Izzy then contacts Sean, who was sweet on her during high school and who is now a lawyer, to help her gather information that clear Rena.

There are many in Merryville who are sad to learn of Sherry's passing, her activist stand has riled many.

The book has many enjoyable characters who provide a few chuckles to go along with the mystery. Aunt Dolly and Ingrid Whitfield, Izzy's landlord, are a lot of fun. Particularly enjoyable is Aunt Dolly who is using her feminine wiles to distract Izzy's neighbor, Richard Greene, from pursuing his desire to have Trendy Tails shut down for being a nuisance.

Looking forward to the next book in this enjoyable series.

Annie Knox begins her new Pet Boutique Mystery series with, Paws

Annie Knox begins her new Pet Boutique Mystery series with, Paws for Murder. As a new author on the cozy block Knox brings readers a book that will appeal to both the pet lover and the mystery buff. Knox does a fantastic job of introducing readers to Merryville, Minnesota and it's colorful inhabitants, including the furry population. Readers who think of their pets as one of the family will love this one, as well as, readers who are looking for a new favorite heroine this year. Izzy McHale definitely fits the bill!

    What I liked:

At my house in the country we have outside dogs and little indoor diva. I love animals and the theme for this was a little over the top but totally understandable for those who really get attached to their pets. I liked the fact that Izzy's shop, Trendy Trails was all about the pet, from clothing to their own bakery, serving pet food with posh. I imagined it as a spa for animals and I thought it was interesting theme and played well to both mystery and pet lovers. Knox came up with a series theme that a little out of the ordinary and that's a tough job in the cozy genre.

The victim in this one is an activist that has a hard time keeping her opinions to herself. I liked the fact that Knox starts out the series with the opening of Trendy Trails and that, that is the first time we get to see the victim and possibly the killer. From the get go I found myself reading the descriptions of the people in Merryville closely, trying to figure out whic one was the killer. Knox drew me in quickly, and the pace of the story rocketed from there. I thought the mystery aspects of the book were spot on, and that Knox had obviously done her homework.

The set up for the series tends to take over in the first book, but not so with Paws for Murder. Knox does a great job of balancing the series vs. the story in this one. She keeps her background to a minimum and lets the reader infer a lot of information as the story itself unfolds. She had a very good grasp of what was important and what the reader needed to get interested in this town and these people. She had a good hook and her writing was concise and well done.

Izzy McHale is a great new cozy heroine. She has the curiosity of her pets and can't seem to stay out of trouble when her best friend Rena is accused of the murder. I liked the fact that Izzy doesn't rely on her pets to solve the crime, but does understand their intuition. Jinx and Packer were a great part of the story and readers will instantly love them.

    What I didn't like:

I liked this one a lot but I did figure it out early on, whether that was because I read a ton of cozy mysteries or because it was obvious remains to be seen. I think it's one of those books where the journey was just as important as the big reveal.

    Bottom Line:

Overall this was a great first book in a series. It was well balanced, had a great heroine and an interesting theme to work with. I look forward to seeing what Annie Knox has in mind next, and the preview at the back of the book gives me a pretty good idea, I'm going to like it.

This was great book to read. Very fast paced, the mystery was well developed. There was a great list of suspects that had really good reasons, why they might want to kill the victim. You well be guessing all the way up towards the end of the book.

Loved the animal theme, the animals were so adorable. I could just picture them running around in Trendy Tails and through the whole of Merryville. Izzy, and the rest of the cast of human characters are great as well. Each character has really interesting side stories. That can continue in the next book in the series.

For anyone whom is interested in cozy mysteries or books based around animals. I think you well really enjoy reading, Paws for Murder.

Annie Knox is a stellar writer! Each of her characters make you feel like you know them. This book really kept me guessing till the very end. For once a mystery where the person who is looking for the killer does not get into trouble. A very nice change of pace. I loved each and everyone of the animals. Although still wanting to know what happens in the end to the guinea pig!
