SECOND ELECTRONIC EDITION, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN 2008 AS CHANNELING MORPHEUS: PAYBACK

The hunt is on.

Pretty young men and women like Michael’s best friend, Scary Mary, are disappearing from underground goth clubs all over Detroit. For over two years, Michael has been scouring the midwest for buried newspaper articles and obscure medical reports, and now he’s finally pinpointed the source of the problem. Too bad he can’t exactly go to the cops and tell them his friend was murdered by vampires. Since it’s his duty to start wiping out the scourge, he’s posing as bait—and he’s got a bag of sharpened hickory stakes to do the job.

Everything should go smoothly, given the amount of preparation that Michael has put into the hunt. He’s got a practiced repertoire of come-hither eyeliner looks and a full blister-pack of the date rape drug Rohypnol. But he didn’t count on Wild Bill showing up.

Wild Bill is a vision in spiked hair and scuffed black leather—exactly the type of guy Michael would have fallen for…if he’d ever had the chance. Unfortunately, with a vampire in his sights, Michael has no time for an actual date. Despite his best efforts, it seems there’s nothing Michael can do to shake Bill loose. Looks like they’re in for a wild, wild ride.

Editorial Reviews

Joyfully Reviewed
Channeling Morpheus: Payback is a wonderfully dark tale that is all about Michael and his need for revenge and even though Payback is not strictly a romance it does leave the door open to the possibility for it.  Especially with the surprise he got from Wild Bill and Michael’s determination to find out more. - Joyfully Recommended by Sabella

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I think it's the first time I read a book so short and I don't feel unsatisfied. I liked Payback a lot! I was hooked from the start. The characters were well described even if with a story like this is understandable the author can't give us a background about the MCs. I definitely want to know more about Wild Bill, I honestly didn't see it coming, it was a interesting surprise. I loved Michael, I found some of his internal dialogue very amusing. And the sex scene was really good, even Michael was having problems to stay focus on his mission!
Maybe, just maybe, since I'm a hopeless romantic, I'd have preferred that at the end Michael wasn't alone at the station, but this is just the first in a series ten books, I'm sure I will have my happy ending (I hope lol). I need the next one and more about Michael and Bill!

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The book starts off with Michael preparing for his night with a vampire. He has all the necessary weapons he needs and is sitting at a bar when he's approached by wild bill who is a bit persistent but eventually leaves him be. A few moments later he finally approached by a guy who he believes is his target. Michael puts on the seduction pretty fast.

The story is told from Michael's perspective. I found him to be quite an amusing guy. The descriptiveness the author employs in portion of the story funny made me laugh.

ex. At least I’d practiced something, and had a bedroom stare to paint over my real expression, which probably would’ve been something like a deer in the headlights of an eighteen-wheeler hauling two dozen SUVs. (13)

For a short story the book was wonderfully paced. The menage scene between Grey, Bill and Michael didn't come off as a turn off and was actually a bit blush inducing. I liked that even when faced in a sexual situation Michael was trying to keep a cool head to carry out the task he set for himself. The little tidbit we learn about Bill was a morsel I found I wouldn't mind imbibing on. I'll definitely will be giving the rest of the series a read.
