VOYA - Beth Karpas
This is a strong series which addresses the college application process in a concise manner, but College Choice and Paying for College are the more valuable resources. Thin enough to read in one sitting, each volume is full of facts, resources, and advice. Chapters are short and well organized. Numerous photographs break up the text, although many look posed. Sidebars such as "Acing the Essay" and "Be Active!" - advice on passive versus active word choice - are useful for even the most well-informed applicant. Detailed explanations on calculating inflation and including indirect costs in financial need assessments are extremely helpful. Advice to avoid emotional reasons and stick to facts when choosing a college is debatable, but is more than made up for with practical questions to ask a college's representative and an action plan for wait-listed students. Similarly, a wonderful section on loan forgiveness offers the reader information many don't think about until after college. The myths and facts sections in all three volumes offer useful advice without being proscriptive. While College Choice and Paying for College are fantastic references, listing resources in readable prose and providing some advice, Your First Year has fewer resources and more behavioral suggestions. The thin, easy-reader presentation with numerous pictures and creative fonts feels a bit childish for the college freshman, limiting this volume's audience. Reviewer: Beth Karpas
