From The CriticsReviewer: Amy Hess-Fischl, MS, RD, LDN, BC-ADM, CDE (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This is the second edition of a PDR guide to the most accurate, up-to-date information about the most used nutritional supplements designed for healthcare professionals who must remain up-to-date when discussing supplements with patients and clients.
Purpose: This guide provides needed information about hundreds of nutritional supplements in an easy-to-use format.
Audience: It is a useful tool for all healthcare professionals who work with patients. The editors, who also worked on the first edition, are well respected authorities in the field.
Features: Each of the over 200 alphabetized monographs of nutritional supplements is arranged to outline a description of each supplement, along with its action, indications, research summary, contraindications, interactions, overdosage, dose and administration, and literature available. Some monographs include chemical structure drawings, but otherwise there are no visuals, although they are not necessary for this to be an excellent resource. This edition also includes a section on interactions, which categorizes potential adverse events between nutritional supplements and drugs, and between supplements and other foods.
Assessment: I have always purchased every edition of the PDRs, since they give accurate, up-to-date information that I can easily translate for the patients I work with, and the PDR for Nutrition Supplements is no different. It is an excellent reference for all healthcare professionals.
