Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-In this cumulative tale, a small village in coastal Maine is surrounded by thick fog. A "tiny girl" has a suggestion as to its origin-her Grammy's pea soup-but the townsfolk do not believe her. After enlisting help in getting rid of the vapor from the butcher, the baker, and the candle maker, they listen to the girl, who takes them to Grammy's to warm up. After the villagers eat the woman's soup, the fog lifts and the sun shines. The story would work as a read-aloud, and children may chime in on the refrain, "But the fog did not go away. No way. Not at all." The color illustrations depict a bygone era, and the folk-art style works well with the setting and the story. Though the details and backgrounds are nicely done, the characters are poorly delineated. Still, combined with a reading of "Stone Soup," this would make a nice lesson in sharing and community cooperation.-Angela J.
