PreS-Gr 4-The purpose of this album is to teach children to respect diversity racial, cultural, physical, and religious. As a creative endeavor, it is only partially successful. A young child, Tati Houston, begins this album by reciting a rather trite poem, "I Plant a Seed." Also included is a story, "The Truth About Friendship," about a new student named Andre who must use a wheelchair. The other children accept him after he is able to assist an injured boy by having him sit in his lap to be wheeled to the nurse's office. Although the story is very well read by actress Elayn Taylor, it is very didactic and makes its point with a sledgehammer. The seven songs are more successful, featuring excellent vocals and instrumentals and catchy tunes. "A World of Difference" has a calypso beat and talks about everyone being one in a world of differences. "I Believe in Myself" is a short a cappella song with accompanying hand claps. African drums are used in "Peace in Our Land" while the Peace Choir sings that everyone is the same. "Family" has a 1970s soul sound, and Laythan Armor contributes marvelous bass vocals. The other three songs are "A Smile Is a Smile," "Love Comes in Every Color," and "Thankful." Bunny Hull, Grammy Award-winning songwriter and composer of Patti LaBelle's hit song, "New Attitude," has written and composed all the songs for this album. The activity booklet has black-and-white line drawings (for coloring) by well-known illustrator Synthia Saint James, the lyrics for two of the songs, and several workbook-style learning activities. This product will be most useful in a classroom setting.-Beverly Bixler, San Antonio Public Library, TX Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
