Engelbreit continues her exploration of traditional Christmas fare with this collection of Christmas carols, poems and short biblical passages about the Nativity. The biblical verses are drawn from the books of Matthew and Luke in the New Testament of the Christian Bible, with short selections describing the journeys of the shepherds and the wise men. The rest of the Nativity story is conveyed through traditional Christmas carols such as "The First Noel" and "Angels We Have Heard on High." Short poems fill in more of the Christmas story with familiar and rather old-fashioned choices such as William Blake's "The Lamb" and the traditional "Lullay, My Liking." Engelbreit's illustrations are filled with smiling children of different ethnicities, beautiful angels surrounded by glowing light, and traditional, sweetly pleasant illustrations of Mary and the Christ Child. Many of the illustrations are full-page, surrounded by intricate borders, and often have short quotes or sayings incorporated into the art. This is a collection that will serve children best by dipping into over several sessions rather than reading straight through. Engelbreit's legions of fans, many of them adults, adore her illustration style, and they will love this cream puff of a holiday offering. (Picture book/religion. 4-9)

Absolutely beautiful hardcover book that would make an incredible Christmas gift.  I even found that, if you break apart the readings, there is a way to use this book as a fun Advent Calendar style, reading one entry a day as your children open up windows on a separate Advent Calendar.  This book will not disappoint. Mary Engelbreit brought her best to the illustrations in this book. What a lovely gift this wold make for a Sunday School teacher, preschool teacher, or any child or expectant parent on your list.

I got these books on sale and plan to use as a giant Christmas card for family members. A sweet book for every age. Love Mary Engelbreit art-work.

This book is a collection of hymns, Christmas carols, poems and stories all surrounded by Engelbreit’s distinctive artwork. It’s something children and adults alike will enjoy reading and look forward to pulling out each Christmas season. It’s full of songs and poems I’ve heard before as well as some I’d never seen before. I’m thrilled to add this book to my collection; it’ll make a great coffee table book. The only bad thing about this book is that I received it in October and it’s really making me wish Christmas were sooner!

I give this 5 hearts for the illustrations. Anything by Mary Engelbreit is going to be detailed and beautiful and this book does not disappoint in that. I think my favorite picture in the whole book is the one entitled Peace on Earth with the picture of a lion holding a lamb and the lamb giving the lion a kiss. At the beginning of the book is a note from Mary Engelbreit stating that some of the stories collected in this book are some of her favorites. Along with the story of Jesus' birth from the Gospel of Luke there are several popular hymns sung at Christmas time, some children's poems, and a couple of stories telling of the miracle of Christmas. As I said, I would give the illustrations 5 hearts, but the content I would probably give 4 hearts to. I think children will be entertained by the illustrations because of the details, but they may become bogged down in some of the stories. I can see my grand children sitting while I sing some of the songs to them, but I can also see them ready to move on to the next illustration while reading some of the stories. So maybe it isn't a book to sit down and read all at once, maybe pick out a story or song here and there during the Christmas season. I'm definitely looking forward to adding this to my Christmas book collection and sharing it with my grand children.

This is a beautiful, devout and colorful book introducing the story of the birth of Jesus to young children. There are readings from the Gospels of St. Luke and Mathew, the words of traditional carols without music, poetry , a story, an article by James Freeman Clarke "God Made So Many Different Kinds of People, Why Would He Allow Only One Way to Serve Him? The large colorful and appealing illustrations make this a very pretty book to give to a child  - or to oneself..
