Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
Six biographies of individuals who have made great achievements while seeking peace are featured in this nonfiction text in the "Profiles" series. The life stories of Mahatma Gandhi, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King, Jr., Desmond Tutu, Dalai Lama, and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf are recounted in text accompanied by photographs. An introduction discusses the fact that all of these people have helped promote peace in the world. A photo with a brief summary of the significant goals and achievements of each person is at the beginning of each biography. A detailed description of their lives beginning at birth and continuing throughout their lives is provided, including information about their early years, education, and experiences that particularly influenced them. Numerous dates and facts are provided. For example, the biography of Dalai Lama includes a list of the Five Point Peace Plan for Tibet. A brief conclusion discusses how each of these individuals made the decision to follow a path of nonviolence and devoted themselves to peace. A timeline, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index are included. With its descriptive and thorough narrative, this book would make a good addition to libraries and schools. It would be useful for students who need resource information for research purposes. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
