About the Author:
James L. Ferrell is a graduate of Brigham Young University and Yale Law School. Professionally, he has authored numerous books and serves as managing director of The Arbinger Institute, a renowned management-consulting firm and scholarly consortium that specializes in peacemaking. He and his wife, Jackie, have five children.

Rick is a believer in Christ and father of four, but his marriage is locked in a miserable death spiral of petty arguments and wounded pride. Rick is crushed with self-pity and resentment toward his wife when his deceased grandfather begins visiting him in dreams in an effort to bring him to the peace and forgiveness promised by Christ. This homiletic storytelling in a nonfiction book may not work for everyone, but the sermon embedded in the tale is terrific. Ferrell offers powerful interpretations of two Old Testament stories: the relatively obscure encounter between David and Abigail (wife of Nabal) that takes place in 1 Samuel, and the better-known story of Jonah and Nineveh. In both, Ferrell finds archetypes of Christ and evidence of how the atonement is designed to make it as easy as possible for us to forgive others and thereby attain our own peace and salvation. The genius of this little book is to weave biblical insights back into the story of modern-day Rick and his wife-to show how moments of forgiveness not only stay life-and-death battles, but also the daily battles that lead to bitter estrangements of loved ones. Been hurt...

I have been a victim, of much, for much of my life. I could not understand WHY I was being told 'I' needed to repent. This incredible, incredible book on The Atonement is so-o well written from the view of 'Ricky' a young father who feels wronged in his marriage. His loving Grandfather Carson has passed on, and comes to help him see why and how the Atonement covers his wife's sins* [*in Ricks eyes]. Rick needs to worry about his own sins, even though he thinks he has been sinned against. The scriptures 'come to life' in a series of dreams. Doctrine is taught, all the while, Ricky clinging to and justifying HIS hurt and anger. (sound familiar?) Through this book, the scriptures & prayer, I am finally able to move forward, and am beginning to heal from my many wounds of the past.

A 'can't put it down' Masterpiece on the Atonement

This is a truly remarkable book--for me, the best book I have ever read. I can hardly describe it as it gives such a fresh and clarifying view of Christ's atonement, and how the Savior can change our hearts and the health and happiness of our relationships. Part of its power, I think, is that the book unfolds as a real-to-life story, so that the learnings about the atonement--which are truly stunning--have a context that makes them real and practical. I have already read the book three times, in less than two weeks, and I'm sure I'll read it many more times in the coming months and years. It is an eye-opening, heart-changing read. If you are a believer in Christ, or at least open to the Christian message, this is a must read.

This book changed our lives

My husband and I had this book recommended to us. We happen to be members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, as the author is, however, the person who recommended it to us is not. The author very craftily deals with marriage struggles, communication, holding grudges, blaming others, forgiveness and much more by using stories from the Old Testament which we normally bypass. It is hard to explain how the author teaches and touches hearts without being "preachy" or boring. We read the book fairly quickly, but did plenty of underlining and plan to re-read it often. This sounds trite, but we both felt profoundly changed as a result of this book.
