Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Kim Carter
Despite the elitist-and highly marketable-title, this book has value for every student, regardless of age. Psychologist Neihart synthesizes the psychology literature of peak performance, succinctly presenting a straightforward framework for mental resilience and perseverance. Written for parents, her guide emphasizes seven essential mental competencies: "tolerance for stress or anxiety; a willingness to work at the edge of one's competence (risk-taking); SMART goal setting; mental rehearsal; optimism; mood management; and an ability to resolve the need to belong with the need to achieve." Focusing on one competency at a time, each chapter presents a brief overview of its featured topic, followed by practical techniques and activities for teaching and coaching young people in that competency. Worksheets and additional resources round out the practical usefulness of each chapter. The final chapter emphasizes "The Most Important Thing": romance. "To become an elite performer, a child must first fall in love." Equally important, Neihart stresses, "Let your child pursue his dreams, not yours.o Although every youth will not become an elite performer, becoming skilled in the seven mental competencies of peak performance will enable each one to more fully realize his or her own capabilities. The title will draw parents eager to help their children develop a competitive edge; the book belongs in the hands of every teacher committed to empowering students to assume active ownership of their lives. One can only hope that Neihart would write a companion book for students. Reviewer: Kim Carter
