Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
On December 7, 1941, Japanese planes attacked and devastated the American Pacific Fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This surprise attack resulted in the sinking of a number of American ships, including many powerful battleships. In addition, hundreds of American warplanes were destroyed while parked on various airfields. More than 2,400 American military personnel were killed in this attack while a further 1,700 were wounded. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt went on to describe that date as one that would "live on in infamy." The attack at Pearl Harbor is the subject of this volume in the illustrated "24/7 Goes to War" series. Through accounts of actual witnesses to the surprise attack, readers come away with a sense of how terrible and confusing those events were. Readers will meet Dorrie Miller, an African American sailor who leaped into the fray and shot down several Japanese planes from a machine gun emplacement of a damaged ship. Likewise the stories of nurses, pilots, and rescue workers who did their best during the most trying circumstances of the battle are also presented. In this way, individuals' life experiences are woven into a cohesive whole that tells the story of this singular battle in a memorable way. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
