Overview

The spellbinding conclusion to the Darkangel Trilogy!

Armed with a magical pearl imbued with all the sorcery and wisdom of the world, bestowed upon her by the Ancient known as Ravenna, Aeriel finally comes face-to-face with the White Witch and her vampire sons. Backed by her husband, his army of good, and a throng of magical steeds, she must unlock the power of the pearl to awaken her true destiny and save the world.

With the aid of a shimmering pearl, Aeriel battles the White Witch to free her husband Irrylath and discovers her own true destiny.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Readers who crave solemn tales peopled with strange beings will find much to relish in this final volume of the Darkangel trilogy. Deprived of both her memory and the power of speech, Aeriel awakens to find herself in a cave somewhere below the earth's surface. In the company of three underground-dwelling duarroughs--natives--Aeriel journeys to the city of Crystalglass. There she meets Ravenna, the last of the race of ancient beings who created the world. Ravenna restores Aeriel's memory and reveals to her the nature of the role she must play in the final battle against the cruel White Witch. Though good does finally triumph over evil, this novel's conclusion is not a typical ``happy ending'': Aeriel is reunited only briefly with her estranged husband before she must leave to begin the lonely task of healing her planet. Pierce's thoughtful characterization and well-constructed plot lead to a poignant and believable conclusion. The meticulous, creative use of language gives form and substance to a fascinating mythic world. Ages 12-up. (Jan.)
ALAN Review
Finally available at a reasonable price, this third and concluding volume in the "Dark Angel" trilogy brings the resolutions of conflicts and challenges that Aerial and 1rrylath faced through the first two volumes. Nine years is a long time to wait for a book, but diehard Pierce fans will be swarming the shelves for this 1999 paperback version. Themes of self-sacrifice and responsibility and the preservation of the balance and interdependence of all nature rise from the action-filled plot based on the journey-with-a-mission motif. Pierce once again shows her talent as an artist, painting the scenes in vibrant technicolor. Through her use of symbolism and imagery, she will capture most readers to prepare them for this powerful tale of reason over passion, good over evil, and responsibility over selfishness. Some readers will be disappointed with the not-so-happy ending, but more mature readers will readily discern the inevitability of the outcome. For the reader not already conversant with Pierce's characters and places, a helpful pronunciation guide accompanies the text. Genre: Fantasy. 1999, Harcourt Brace, Ages 12 up, $6.00. Reviewer: Marjorie M. Kaiser
School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up-- A young woman wanders dazed through a labyrinth of caves, unable to speak or remember her own name. A glowing pearl hangs around her neck, and sunk into her skull is a tiny silver pin. With this arresting scene, Pierce opens the final volume of her award-winning ``Darkangel'' trilogy (Joy Street/Little). Her heroine, Aeriel, is a victim of the world-destroying witch she has tried to thwart; the silver pin has put Aeriel in this state. Rescued and restored by the Ancientlady Ravenna (who bestows her powers and knowledge upon Aeriel before dying), Aeriel must take the pearl to Ravenna's heir. The destruction of the witch crushes the immediate threat to the planet, but Aeriel, newly reunited with her husband, Irrylath, finds new sorrows in her role as world guardian. The striking opening scene draws readers irresistibly into Pierce's fantasy world, but the flashback necessitated by this beginning slows the pace of the story considerably. Those who have read the earlier books will find this no hardship, however. Pierce continues to have the power to capture the imagination of her readers. Her creativity never falters. --Ruth S. Why the Lousy Ending?

This series led so dramatically to the final book! Then the reader is blind-sided by an author who took a fairy tale with superior potential to be the next #1 Best Seller and turned it into a Stephen King ending! I was crying and wanted to scream until I couldn't scream again. What a nightmare of an ending! I wish now that I had never picked up the first book - which was good. I read all three books in three days. The first two kept me up all night reading. I wish the third book had been lost in the Sea of Dust until the author realized what a lousy ending they had written and made it into the happily ever after we want as readers. This series, with the ending it has, should be placed into the 'Horror' section of the libraries and book stores. I am so angry, sad, and let down...

    Overall great story

As always, you can't compare the ending of a series without discussig the other previous novels. The first two books were simply addictive and this last novel had that same quality. However, this time the ending wasn't as satisfactory. I wasn't expecting a perfect ending but i didn't think what happened was right either. In any case, I will ne reading this series again.

    Read this years ago

I stormed through this amazing trilogy (covers have changed) years ago in my teen years and loved it, the only reason there are 4 stars instead of 5 is because I didnt like the ending. Still great, im just a romantic. :)

    Wonderful except the ending

I read the first two books years ago and loved them only to find the last book wasn't out. I reread the series and loved the first two as much as ever, but the last one was distressing. I was happy reading it until the last two chapters made my heart sank. I understand the responsibility and sacrifice themes of the books in a world of selfishness. But you know, there could've been another ending.

Like maybe, the world now united after coming together to fight alongside each other, and now all the lands ruled by brothers, the issue of slavery in Terrain being resolved by the Sphynx, why not the other lands follow that example - couldn't the people of the world learned responsibility and worked together to heal the world instead of again having to rely on someone else to do things for them using magic from a selfish being now using the main character?

The revelations at the ending seemed a little of out left field and almost like a punishment.

    A treasure from my childhood.

Amazing series of books written by a literary genius. A tragedy, full of romance, fantasy and angst. Pierce has created an entire universe with this trilogy.

    why!

I refuse to believe that this could be the last book. The ending was such a disappointment! There could be another book to give us an ending we all want. I hope that some day there will be but I know that's very unlikely. Overall its an amazing trilogy.

    I Also Recommend:

    AWESOME, INSPIRING!

was very disturbed when I read the other on-line reviews. I think that this book is the culmination of the other two in the trilogy. If the ending were truly as bad as everyone seems to make it out to be, I think I would have been the first to notice. After all, I waited for years to discover the ending. I first read The Darkangel in third grade. Later after Pierce wrote the second book, I searched and searched for the book only to find it in a second hand store my freshman year of college. My college roommate was the one who searched for the third book, and she gave me the book for my college graduation. As you may guess, I had my own desires that Areil and her Prince would end up "happily ever after." However, I was not disappointed. The whole series has focused on the theme of responsibility and sacrifice. In the first book, Ariel sacrifices herself first to serve her mistress and later to save the good and destroy the evil within the darkangel. In the second, Ariel sacrifices her time and energy in trying to to recover the gargoyles and restore them to their former selves. The third book shows Ariel once again sacrificing herself so that the world may be a better place. Ultimately, the message of this trilogy is very religious and inspring in a world overrun by selfishness. Further, I think Ms. Pierce is a woman of incredible talent. I am now a graduate student of literature and I can honestly say that reading Pierce's novels early in life instilled in me a love of the written word that has yet to be quenched.

    Now, Honestly...

All right. I have to say something, and I have to say it now. Just because the ending of a book didn't turn out the exact way you wanted it to doesn't mean that book deserves a bad rating! Any mature, intelligent reader will know that The Pearl of the Soul of the World ended the only way it could. This book, like all of Pierce's, is romantic and eye-catching, fascinating to the very last syllable! Read this series! You'll find few books that are better! I reccommend this book to teens and up.

    Apathetic

The book is well written, but pity for the ending. The last few chapters are as if a drop of red blood in a clear, crystal lake.
