Overview

Throughout your life, you’ve had numerous everyday conversations and other experiences in which a small observation—-perhaps a single sentence someone spoke to you—-resonated so strongly that you still remember it years later. The “pearls of wisdom” that arose from such small encounters helped shape your values, how you think about yourself, and how you interact with others.
In "Pearls from Sand: How Small Encounters Lead to Powerful Lessons", Karl Wiegers presents more than three dozen of the personal pearls of wisdom he’s accumulated over his life. You’ll find that many of these lessons will apply to your life, as well. Karl describes the experiences and conversations that led to each pearl, along with ways that you can apply them to enhance your own happiness and fulfillment. The 37 life lessons, revealed and illustrated through dozens of true anecdotes, are grouped into six categories: interpersonal pearls, personal pearls, inspirational pearls, practical pearls, cautionary pearls, and professional pearls.
   "Pearls from Sand" will:
 * Give you many insightful and practical ideas about how to apply these lessons to your own life.

• Encourage you to think of your own pearls of wisdom, the experiences that led to them, and how they can guide your thoughts and actions.

• Motivate you to find opportunities to pass along your own life lessons to your children, life partner, friends, and colleagues.
Daily life is full of opportunities to learn and grow—-if you’re paying attention and receptive to the message. Read "Pearls from Sand" to learn how to detect, assess, absorb, and apply these powerful life lessons.

Meet the Author

Karl Wiegers, Ph.D., is a keen observer of daily life. Karl realized how small, everyday experiences can impart significant life lessons—-if you’re paying attention. His recollection of many such “pearls of wisdom” that emerged from conversations and encounters in his life led him to write Pearls from Sand: How Small Encounters Lead to Powerful Lessons. Karl’s hope is that you will find many of these lessons to relate to your own life, and that you’ll reflect on the lessons—your own pearls—that have helped you live a happier and more fulfilling life.
Karl received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry. He worked at Kodak for 18 years as a research scientist, software developer, software manager, and software quality and process improvement leader. In 1997 he launched Process Impact, a software process consulting and training company based in Portland, Oregon. He has delivered more than 500 keynotes, presentations, and training classes worldwide. Karl is the author of six popular books on software development and management, in addition to 175 articles on computing, chemistry and military history. When he's not at the keyboard, Karl enjoys wine tasting, reading military history, cooking, playing guitar, and writing and recording music.

    A Pearl of a Book

This book is written in an informal narrative style. It contains numerous anecdotal stories that you really want to read, composed in a manner that that invites you to read them. This is the rare book that contains life lessons written as if being shared by a friend, which is a refreshing change from the masses of the supposedly inspirational works that come across as "preachy". It invokes the reader to examine their own life's lessons, and inspires a level of wisdom and sensibility in the reader that is so infrequently attained as we get caught in the grind of our daily lives without pause or reflection. Each of the "pearls" of wisdom brings to mind similar experiences that I have encountered, along with the lessons and personal growth that I gained from those experiences. I've enjoyed reading this book, and have re-read different passages of particular significance and importance to me. Karl Wiegers has a writing style that is so impressive that it makes me dread the end of book as the thickness of the pages held in my right hand becomes less than the left. I suppose that is where the real brilliance of the website applies; Karl has created an entire website that is dedicated to the readers and allows them to submit their own "pearls "and share with others. It rings true of the "pay it forward" concept, which in a way is Karl's lasting "pearl" to society. This is a wonderful idea, a fantastic book, and an excellent website. But I would have expected nothing less from Karl Wiegers, since everything that I have known him to produce has been more than worth my time and the price of admission. Karl, thank you and please keep your creative talents alive for the rest of us to enjoy and experience!

    Insightful & Reflective! Highly Recommended.

Pearls from Sand is well written and each chapter is detailed with Karl Wieger's experience and thoughts. It's wonderful how Karl Wieger's describes each Pearl, and how each impacted him and the resulting effect on his life. The Pearls you'll find included are genuine pearls of wisdom that stick with you and think about on a daily basis. The chapter "Don't Sneeze On Your Spouse" has had a profound impact on me already in the way I approach my family, but many others have impacted me in my day-to-day business interactions and personal interactions. Karl Wieger's does not dissapoint with Pearls from Sand. It's a fantastic book with insight, a high level of personal and professional life experience, and lessons that anyone can learn from. I highly recommend this book.
