The wonder of the solar system is on display in this field-guide style nonfiction book for emergent readers. Author Joanne Mattern successfully limits the focus of this book to the Sun, the Earth's moon, eight planets, and five dwarf planets. Two-page spreads with vibrant photographs show fascinating details, from the Sun as a tiny speck in the Milky Way, to the rocky surface of Mars. Pronunciation guides, basic facts such as diameter and distance from the Sun, and maps to show the location of each planet provide an introduction to subject-specific vocabulary and concepts without overwhelming the book's younger audience. With a table of contents, glossary, index, and additional resources, this book, part of "The Pebble First Guides" series, is a good introduction to the components of nonfiction books. The smaller size of the book ensures it will fit comfortably in the hands of its intended readers. While some may argue that the solar system is a subject too abstract and complex for emergent readers, those interested in the topic yet frustrated by the variety of books written for older readers will be excited to discover it on the library or classroom shelves.
