Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Judy Moreau, MD (Ochsner for Children)
Description: This book, geared to students and residents, uses a systems-based format for the pediatric diagnostic examination.
Purpose: With its focus on using the exam to formulate a diagnosis makes this a worthy undertaking. Often students and residents come to rely too heavily on laboratory tests and imaging to get to a diagnosis.
Audience: This book is geared to students or residents in pediatrics and family practice, but will be a useful resource to nurses and nurse practitioners as well as a good review for all practitioners.
Features: Each chapter covers a specific system/topic but all are organized in a similar manner, with an introduction, physiology, anatomy, history, exam, diagnosis, lab and imaging, and when to refer section. Illustrations demonstrating specific tests/maneuvers are especially helpful along with a description.
Assessment: This is a useful resource for students and residents. It has a very easy-to-access format. It is also small enough to be easily carried by the student/resident. Overall, I was impressed with the content and format of this book.
