Description: This book is directed at providing instructions for the initial treatment of children in many different emergency scenarios.
Purpose: The material is presented in a well organized format with a system of visual clues based on symbols for basic care "building blocks." These symbols provide a rapid system of directing care using these cues for specific skill sets and their order of application in specific situations which might be encountered in child care. The book does a good job in presenting these individual, coded skill sets. It then proceeds to present scenarios demonstrating the application of these skill sets which will serve as a rapid reference if similar circumstances are encountered with the symbols to assist with rapid recall. The entire presentation is well conceived and executed for the intended audience.
Audience: The design and content of this book is primarily directed at daycare and school personnel with some chapters specifically targeting organizations in preparation for emergencies within these settings. It would also be very helpful for laypersons likely to be involved in the care of children on any extended basis. It is written and has been reviewed primarily by emergency medical services teachers, advisors, and practitioners.

Assessment: This is an easy to read guide for management of childhood emergencies with a handy system to aid in initial learning and later recall of important steps in emergency care. The format is quite comfortable and consistent throughout, producing a guide which might actually be read by persons not in the field of medicine.
