Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: William F. Balistreri, MD (Children's Hopsital Medical Center)
Description: The new edition of this book is an impressive endeavor to keep the reader abreast of the current concepts in the rapidly growing field of pediatric gastroenterology. The changes and additions are in keeping with the developments in this discipline over the past decade.
Purpose: The purpose is to disseminate updated knowledge leading to the prevention, treatment, and cure of digestive diseases. The contributors do full justice to their respective areas of interest. This new edition largely meets its overall objectives.
Audience: The book is intended not only for trainees and practicing pediatric gastroenterologists, but will be useful for the general practitioner as well.
Features: The two handsome volumes are divided into sections and have numerous pictures, tables, and graphs that help illustrate the relevant text. The section containing color pictures of endoscopic findings and histological slides is particularly impressive. The chapter on gene therapy is a welcome and timely addition. The references are extensive and include a large number of relevent recent studies.
Assessment: This book, in its new form, is comprehensive, well written, and makes interesting reading. It has filled a much-awaited need for a pediatric gastroenterology textbook that is practical, yet complete. I highly recommend this book for the individual and library.

Reference textbook deals extensively with the pathophysiologic basis of gastrointestinal disease in children of all ages. An approach to dealing with the families of children with gastrointestinal diseases, and a pathophysiologic section examining cardinal manifestations of gastrointestinal disease as well as the development of the gastrointestinal tract augment the in-depth approach to disease manifestations and management. A careful approach to diagnosis follows. Finally, the principles of therapy are explored. (Mosby distributes this title, which is published by B.C. Decker Inc.) Annotation c.
