The thoroughly updated Fifth Edition of Pediatric Neuroimaging is a highly illustrated text-reference that describes and illustrates the full range of pediatric disorders diagnosable by modern neuroimaging. Covering the diagnosis of brain, spinal, and head and neck disorders in the pediatric patient, the text is rooted in the principle that the proper interpretation of studies requires the acquisition of high-quality images and an understanding of the basic concepts of neuroembryology, normal development, and pathophysiology. Much coverage is given to the disorders seen in everyday practice. The emphasis is on CT and MRI, which are the optimal imaging modalities in children.

The first two chapters describe useful imaging techniques in this patient population and the imaging manifestations of normal development, to distinguish that from manifestations of disease. The final ten chapters of the book are divided by groups of diseases, with numerous drawings and images that illuminate the underlying pathologic and embryologic/genetic bases of each disorder. The goal is provide a basic approach to groups of diseases, then offer detailed information about the clinical manifestations, underlying biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics and/or pathology of specific disorders.

The book incorporates the essential concepts for obtaining good images and understanding normal development, which helps the reader to distinguish normal developmental changes from disease.

This third edition of a discussion of CT and MRI imaging of the pediatric patient includes information on diffusion imaging and spectroscopy. Again, the author stresses the importance of a good understanding of the basic concepts of embryology, normal development, and pathophysiology when trying to understand pathology. The second edition was published in 1995. The purpose is to provide a text for radiologists in training and a reference book for practicing physicians who will be interpreting pediatric images. The book is written for residents, fellows, and practicing physicians. The author touches on all aspects of pediatric neuroimaging, including head, neck, and spine. He discusses the embryology and normal development of the fetus and applies it to the understanding of the problem that is being discussed. He provides mostly CT and MRI images. The book is slightly more encompassing than the last edition in regards to metabolic disorders and to masses of the face and neck. It also has a better classification for brainstem tumors. One added feature to this book, which the author mentions in his preface, is a list of disorders found after the table of contents, which allows the reader to recognize a disorder and quickly locate it in the text. This is ""the"" reference for any radiologist interpreting pediatric images or for the radiologist in training. It is slightly more encompassing than the second edition, with more information regarding face and neck pathology and diffusion imaging, and there are many more references throughout the book. However, the majority of the text is the same as in the second edition.

This is the second edition of an excellent book on the basic concepts of pediatric neuroimaging with an emphasis on the newer imaging modality of MR, but when appropriate, CT and ultrasound studies are included. The purpose is to describe a systematic approach to the interpretation of normal and abnormal imaging studies of the pediatric central nervous system. This book is needed to help fill the void in the medical literature on pediatric neuroimaging. This book fulfills this objective by using basic concepts of neuroembryology, neuropathology, and examples of imaging studies (MR, CT, ultrasound) to visually demonstrate the normal and pathological findings of the central nervous system. It is targeted to physicians in the field of radiology, especially the resident, fellow, practicing pediatric radiologist, and neuroradiologist, and will be useful to other physicians in the field of neurology, neurosurgery, and neonatology. The author is an authority in the field of pediatric neuroimaging. This book has numerous imaging studies that are appropriate to clarify the text. The references are current and pertinent, and the table of contents is adequate. The book has a pleasing appearance, with imaging studies large enough to easily visualize pathology. There are tables organized to help in the interpretation of abnormal imaging findings. This is an extremely useful book to practicing physicians, fellows, and residents in the field of neuroscience. It provides a simple approach with basic concepts to the interpretation of normal and abnormal imaging studies of the pediatric central nervous system. It is a book that should be bought by libraries, bookstores, and physicians fro use as areference book or textbook. The updated material justifies replacing the previous edition.

Description: This is a comprehensive review of brain development and brain disorders, ranging from congenital malformations to traumatic injuries. The previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a textbook on pediatric neuroimaging for residents, fellows, and practicing physicians. It will also serve as a useful reference for pediatric radiologists. Imaging modalities and naming nomenclature have changed since the previous edition warranting the new edition. The author definitely meets his objective.
Audience: This book is written for physicians in all levels of training as well as practicing physicians in radiology. It would also be useful to physicians training or practicing in neurology, neurosurgery and pediatrics. It will be particularly useful to radiology residents interested in specializing in pediatric radiology.
Features: Initially, the book covers updated techniques and methodology in pediatric neuroimaging including issues surrounding pediatric sedation. MRI and CT are emphasized throughout as they are the emerging modalities for imaging the pediatric brain. Next, normal development of the brain, skull and spine is thoroughly discussed. The remainder of the book covers the many areas of brain, spine and skull disorders. Many high quality CT and MRI images are included. The glossary is thorough and the list of diseases covered in the book that appears after the table of contents is very useful.
Assessment: This is a very high quality pediatric neuroimaging textbook that is a needed update of the 2000 edition, as MRI and CT imaging continue to evolve. This book will be useful to radiology physicians of all levels of training and will also be an excellent reference for physicians in neurology, neurosurgery, and pediatrics.
