Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Kathleen A. Simon, RN, DNSc (Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing)
Description: This CD-ROM contains an interactive question and answer review in a game-oriented approach. The program contains 1,000 multiple-choice questions. The content is divided into eleven categories covering fundamental concepts to advanced areas of pediatric nursing practice.
Purpose: The stated purpose to "test knowledge and learn new concepts in a relaxed, anxiety-free environment" is met. Individuals are allowed to customize the games to meet their needs by selecting specific categories and the number of desired questions.
Audience: The CD-ROM is most appropriate for nursing students studying the nursing care of children.
Features: The three games included in the program are Endless Lecture, Tedious Textbook Torture, and Problem Patient. Within each game, users can select a number of questions from one or all 11 categories of pediatric nursing content. Each game provides clarification to assist in answering questions in a Hint function. Immediate feedback to each question is provided with an animated scene and then rationale explaining correct and incorrect answers is provided. At the end of the game, results can be reviewed in relation to overall performance and/or by category (number correct) and followed by the opportunity to review all incorrect answers or all answers as desired. The results can also be printed to allow individuals to monitor scores over time. The Player's Manual provides clear directions for installation, playing the game, and getting results. It also provides a telephone number and Web site for help with any technical difficulties.
Assessment: In an interactive format, this CD-ROM covers the basic content about the nursing care of children. The questions are largely of a knowledge/recall type versus application of content. The majority of the content is current and accurate, but I did find one question related to the cause of death for children under the age of one year that was incorrect based on CDC data. The rationale provided for the answers is useful, but it would be more helpful if specific references were given to assist the player in seeking additional clarification. The game format is enjoyable, although the animation at times was a bit hokey and generic with adults depicted on a program about pediatric nursing.

Nursing students: A book that wont put you to sleep!

I got this book late in my pediatric rotation and wish I had it from the start. Are you having a hard time reading through all the long chapters??? Trying to digest what you need to know????? Cant figure out how you will remember what you read????? I found the assigned nursing textbooks can put you asleep at some point, or at least make you feel that you want to jump out of your skin from the maze of material that never ends!!!! By the time you are finished you have read so much material you begin rereading pages that you forgot you already read, and have wasted precious time. *** This book will make the best of your time while not putting you to sleep. It's formatted for easy read, and allows you to put it down and walk away for a break, then return later with a feeling that you remembered what you read. Great to take to the beach, park, or keep in your car for a quick study. Catchy phrases and lots of information, small book in comparison to those bulky textbooks that loose you halfway through your study. **Only wish it had a CD with it!!
