Description: This finely crafted handbook provides a concise and engaging overview of pediatric physical assessment and examination.
Purpose: The author intends for the handbook to be used in the education of pediatric primary healthcare providers and to augment the skills of healthcare providers working with children across pediatric health settings. This kind of quick reference is needed in the fast-paced healthcare delivery system, and provides wonderful pediatric pearls and cultural content not otherwise available. The book exceeds the author's objectives.
Audience: This handbook is intended for use in educating pediatric primary healthcare providers, but will be useful for expert providers as well. The author is an educator, pediatric expert, and authority in the field.
Features: An excellent unit covers general assessment of the pediatric patient and family, and separate chapters present in-depth system-specific assessment of the infant, toddler, child, and adolescent. I found the addition of cultural considerations and examples of charting in almost all of the chapters to be extremely relevant to my practice, and enjoyed the pediatric pearls. The photographs and illustrations are clear and well labeled. I was a little disappointed that the author did not provide more information on common pitfalls that can occur due to lack of cultural familiarity with non-Caucasian patients, such as a photograph and description of Mongolian spots on dark-skinned infants or moxibustion marks that may be visible after a family has had the child treated with Asian medical modalities.
Assessment: This is an excellent contribution to the field, and will be an excellent educational and practice tool for any primary healthcare provider. The numerous photographs and illustrations are extremely helpful, and of better quality that those in other pediatric handbooks.
