Description: This is a new review book to prepare medical students to take the redesigned USMLE Step 2 examination. In the newer Step 2 format, basic science knowledge and clinical science information is tested through application to clinical problems and questions. The book is designed to comprehensively cover general pediatrics through a clinical question and answer format enhanced by tutorials that briefly review each subject.
Purpose: The purpose, as simply stated by the author, is to prepare medical students for the pediatrics portion of the Step 2 examination in 1-2 days. Due to the practical format of the book, it would also serve as a concise review for other practitioners taking tests that include pediatric topics.
Audience: The audience is limited to students or practitioners facing examinations that cover pediatric topics. In the disclaimer of the book, the author clearly states that it is not meant as a guide for clinical practice.
Features: The content is comprehensive, but emphasis is placed on those topics that are uniquely pediatric. These include sections on development and behavior, newborns, and an excellent section on child health supervision. The strengths include the practical, clinically based questions that require basic knowledge and clinical reasoning skills and the brief but relevant tutorials that follow every few questions. The author is an academic, general pediatrician with over 20 years of experience, which helps focus this review book on the important basics.
Assessment: I found this book to be complete and easy-to-read. It sent me to my textbooks for confirmation and further reading. For those studying for the USMLE Step 2, this is a good measure of usefulness as it focuses on areas needing review and provides feedback on clinical reasoning skills.
