Overview

A visitor to the zoo climbs on board the double-decker tour bus expecting to get a clear view of all the animals. But he soon discovers that not all the zoo inhabitants are easily found.

As he approaches each exhibit, he strains to spot the occupant without success (although a sharp-eyed reader is likely to spot some clues to the whereabouts of each elusive animal). Shouting out, "Where are you?" brings back the response, "Look again. We are here." And sure enough with a second glance, he finds the missing animals.

This classic peek-a-boo, where-are-you story offers a slight twist, however, when the bus reaches an overlook from which the visitor can see no animals at all. "Now where did you all go?" he calls out in exasperation until he once again takes a second look and discovers that all the animals have joined him on the bus.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Bonnie Bruneau
This delightful, easy-to-read book allows very young children to read a book on their own. Witness the combination of simple but colorful words with silly cartoon illustrations. In this story, a passenger on a bus is taking a tour through the zoo and he cannot see the animals. They are hiding. Suddenly they pop up out of nowhere and the passenger is quite surprised. This book could become a childhood favorite, so hurry up and join in on the tour through the zoo. 1999 orig.
Children's Literature - Patricia Timbrook
Passenger drives a bus through the zoo. Upon seeing an animal's name on a sign, he says, "Peek-a-boo. Where are you?" Beginning with a monkey, who's hiding, he jumps out of a tree and answers, "Look again. I am here." The animal joins the passenger on the bus and the bus goes on. Beginning with one animal, the passenger repeats the question at each stop and the same answer comes back. After one animal, passenger gets two animals, then three animals, and finally four animals. Nine animals play peek-a-boo with the passenger and the monkey. Colorful illustrations and airy line drawings match the simplistic text written to urge new readers to take wing and read! Creatively, the author joins the familiar, the game of peek-a-boo, with the unfamiliar, animal words and pictures. Although friendly in appearances, most of the animals jump out at the passenger and the monkey with the intent to frighten them, an act that may be too overwhelming for little kids, particularly when the animals are bigger than people. Adults may want to pre-read this picture book, one of three in the "New Readers" series, before letting children read it alone.
Children's Literature - Children's Literature
This is a pattern book with interactive elements to teach simple reading and encourage observation of detail. An old man drives his capacious automobile through a zoo ground and looks for animals. The reader should detect the presence of the animal through pictorial hints. The word-pattern rings false, however, as it is a bit stilted. Young children in kindergarten and grade 1 might enjoy this game, but is a very simple book and is far outstripped by the Spot series. The illustrations however, are bold and comical--very appealing. Part of the "New Reader Series." 1999, Pokeweed Press, Ages 3 to 6, $4.95. Reviewer: Martha Cunningham
