Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this die-cut, board book, the text repeats "Peek a" and expects kids to fill in the missing information by looking at the page. For the most part, the page does not give a real clue as to what is coming next. Flipping the page reveals an image with text on the opposite page. The process continues through a cow, ghost, zoo, and choo-choo train until the reader arrives at the last page with its mirror to reflect back the child's face. It is the best mirror that this reviewer has seen in this type of book, but the learning experience is more a game. 2000, Chronicle, Ages 6 mo. to 2, $6.95. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
School Library Journal
PreS-The exuberant illustrations in this guessing-game board book will enchant infants and toddlers. A bright left-hand page with the words "Peek a" faces a right-hand page with die-cut windows through which a visual clue can be seen. Turn the page and "Peek a MOO!" reveals a black-and-white cow; "Peek a BOO!" a green ghost; "Peek a ZOO!" a crowd of animals including an elephant, giraffe, zebra, etc.; and the final puzzle, "Peek a YOU," has a mirror insert. Vibrant colors with plenty of black outlines make this a charming visual treat for the youngest patrons.-Lisa Falk, Los Angeles Public Library Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
Kirkus Reviews
The classic child's game of peek-a-boo becomes an exuberant guessing game in this compact, colorful board book from Laden (When Pigasso Met Mootisse, 1998). Each of the riddles begin with the phrase "Peek a" on one page. The facing page contains a cut out in an enlarged keyhole shape, allowing the reader a brief glimpse of the underlying picture. Readers can then attempt to solve the puzzle before turning the page to reveal the complete picture. The rest of the rhyme is printed on the facing page, e.g., one riddle reveals a quixotic collection of cheerful animals. The answer? "Peek a Zoo," of course! Laden provides plenty of clues for the youngest reader. The artwork on each overlaying page is decorated in a theme to match the answer and the solution to every riddle always rhymes with boo. Color saturates every page, easily capturing a child's attention. The array of cheerful creatures (and one choo-choo train) populating the pages and Laden's whimsical rhymes make this a book little one's will reach for again and again. Companion book is Ready, Set, Go! (Board book. 1-3)

    Great Fun

This little book is so cute and fun. My 9 month old never tires of it. The peek through windows help kids identify objects with just a peek. The play on "peek-a-boo" is fun and will inspire you to do the same without the book. This book is a great size for the car or diaper bag and is quick entertainment when dealing with a bored baby.

Great book from 9 mos to at least 2 years - the kids all love it.

This is one of our granddaughter's favorites....not only is it bright and colorful, but she's able to turn pages easily due to the cutout center. And of course, the mirror at the end is her favorite page! This book gets read often each day.

    Eh

I got this book to read on a flight from NY to Chicago. Not only is it really short(approx 6 pages), it's lack of suspense is maddening. I read the book 4 times, cover to cover, while we were taxiing down the runway. There are sever animals in the book, non of which the author saw fit to write a back story for. Each one is reduced to it's base level, seemingly happy. If it wasn't for the amazing illustrations, you'd have no idea of the pain these creatures have suffered. The horrors that they've experienced at the hands of their torturers. If you're looking for a bed time story, this isn't for you. If you're looking for something to terrify you. Something to make you question humanity and how low the depths of man can sink, this is the book for you.

Great Book for Your Peek-a-Boo Fan!

Based on the good reviews, I purchased this book online for my niece's 1st b-day & was not disappointed. This is a sturdy little board book that will entertain infants, toddlers & adults, too! It's also very short, a bonus if you're asked to read it over & over & over again (& you will!) Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend to a friend. This book makes a wonderful gift & is simply a delight to read with any Peek-A-Boo fan.

    My Son LOVES this book

My son loves this book. I started reading it to him when we was about 6 months old. Now he is over a year and he digs this book out and brings it to me to read it to him. He loves to flip the pages and always gives the baby at the end a kiss (there is a mirror at the end of the book) This book is so worn I am getting him a new copy for Christmas

    My Son's Favorite Book

This is my son's absolute favorite book out of the 30+ board books he has. He never tires of it and after 6 months he still will search for it. We used to carry it around in the diaper bag because it was such a hit. Now it's just on our coffee table (or under it half the time) and he loves to have us read it to him over and over. Time for a new copy - this one's wearing out!
