Editorial Reviews

Under the Radar

Definitive.

Library Journal

American audiences can't understand the colossal influence of British broadcasting legend John Peel on popular music for nearly four decades (1967-2004). British radio historian Garner has fashioned this book as an update of his exhaustive In Session Tonight, a compendium of live pop on the BBC, and refocused it into a history of live music on John Peel's show, complete with an extensive "sessionography" of performances and Peel-centric lists and indexes. For decades, it was the dream of every up-and-coming band in the United Kingdom to record a "Peel Session" for the BBC, and these listings confirm that an astounding number did, many going on to great things. To the serious Anglophile or Britpop fanatic, this book is manna from heaven; unfortunately, those are the only audiences that will benefit from it on our side of the pond. The book is nearly impenetrable for anyone not well acquainted with the history of British pop music or the politics and practices of the BBC and its DJs. It could be considered a companion to the recent Peel memoir, John Peel: Margrave of the Marshes, but neither is the essential tract that will clearly communicate how important Peel was and how he got there.
—Matthew Moyer
