Overview

"The greatest historian that ever lived." Such was Macaulay's assessment of Thucydides (c. 460-400 BC) and his history of the Peloponnesian War, the momentous struggle between Athens and Sparta that lasted for twenty-seven years from 431 to 404 BC, involved virtually the whole of the Greek world, and ended in the fall of Athens. A participant in the war himself, Thucydides brings to his history an awesome intellect, brilliant narrative, and penetrating analysis of the nature of power, as it affects both states and individuals. Of the prose writers of the ancient world, Thucydides has had more lasting influence on western thought than all but Plato and Aristotle. This new edition combines a masterly new translation by Martin Hammond with comprehensive supporting material, including summaries of individual Books; textual notes; a comprehensive analytical index; an appendix on weights, measures and distances, money, and calendars; ten maps; an up-to-date bibliography; and an illuminating introduction by P.J. Rhodes.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Lucid line drawings and photos, 16 in fine color. Based on some 15 years of study and collection in both polar regions and most areas of the tropics and temperate zones. Detailed treatment is given on all known pelagic snails (aoubt 140 species) including: external anatomy, swimming and buoyancy mechanisms, escape and other behavioral responses, feeding and mating habits, reproduction and ontogeny, and evolutionary trends for each group. Reprint of the 1959 U. of Michigan edition of Thomas Hobbes' translation with David Grene's (committee of social thought, U. of Chicago) notes and new introduction. This transition has been considered the truest to the original Greek in capturing Thucydides' use of language in recreating the Athens-Sparta conflict. Annotation c. Not for publication

Just trying to give some feedback: (1) your site inaccurately says that Lattimore's translation of Thucydides' "Peloponnesian War" includes only Book II of that work. No, it's the whole work, & you're doubtless losing some customers who want the whole work. Also, and this kind of thing happens on lots of pages in your site, some of the information at the bottom is referring to another edition, in this case the Norton Critical Edition (Hobbes translation). I wish you would pass along to the Powers That Be how misleading & unnecessary that kind of sloppiness is. But in any event, I hope you'll quit telling everyone that Lattimore's Thucydides is abridged!

    Three Cheers for Andy Lowry

I agree whole-heartedly with Mr. Lowry, who is the first person I have noticed who has complained (and rightly so -- and it's about time) about your exasperating policy of confusingly providing comments from critics and reviewers for editions other than the edition under which they are printed. That policy does the precise opposite of what it is supposed to do -- that is, to aid the potential purchaser in selecting an edition he or she wants. It not only fails to aid the purchaser; it obfuscates the information intended to be enlightening. Please, please change that policy so that your purchasers' decisions may be made more easy instead of more difficult.

    Thucydides on snails

At last! I've been searching for an edition of Thucydides that contains the famous lost final chapters that deal with the role of snails in the Peloponnesian War. Many scholars have speculated on the role that giant snails played in the disastrous battle of the Syracuse Harbor. I am glad that this new edition restores the work to its full glory. I look forward to new editions of Aristotle's lost manual on barbecuing, and perhaps Homer's sequel to the Odyssey, Circe the Vampire Queen.

    Snails?

Why on earth would a listing of snails help me buy this book? Who reviews this stuff?
