Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

In this engaging love story, Austen enthusiast Reynolds (The Pemberley Variations) brings echoes of Elizabeth and Darcy to present-day New England. Marine biologist Cassie Boulton spends summers at an insular Cape Cod academic community, studying salt marshes. Sparks fly when Calder Westing, the heir of a famous political dynasty, enters her life, but Cassie knows better than to fall for a man who can have any woman he wants. Certain her low-profile career and inner-city Chicago background disqualify her from long-term consideration, she cuts ties with Calder after just one steamy night. Cassie doesn't know that Calder harbors genuine feelings for her. With some literary maneuvering, Calder finally wins Cassie's heart, but his powerful, ruthless father is determined to split them up. Beyond a surplus of cliché and throwaway characters, lush descriptions of Cape Cod are appropriately aphrodisiacal, the couple's wit and chemistry make them worth rooting for, and Cassie's well-rendered intellectual life not only gives her depth and independence, it gives readers a welcome break from that standard of modern heroine-ism, the plucky fashion and/or media lackey. Not a DIK, but a light read

I am a Jane Austin fan and I enjoyed this book although I am not sure I would pay the trade size price a second time. I did find this book in the romance section of the book store. So I expected it to be a "romance" novel. There are sexual scenes in this book but they are by no means as detailed as many other romance novels. I would have graded the book higher if the ending didn't seem drawn out with unneeded drama. The beginning of the book was quite enjoyable.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

AKA: The Man Who Loved Pride & Prejudice

This was another great Pride & Prejudice book by Abigail Reynolds. This modern retelling of Pride & Prejudice is filled with great characters and keeps the reader captivated by the story from start to finish.

No room for Liberal politics in Austen like books! Waste of money!

The author made a terrible mistake trying to make a political statement while writing a book geared towards Austen addicts. The overt liberal agenda was nauseating. The Mr. Darcy(Calder), is the son of an evil Republican "Kennedy". I would be just as disappointed if the story line was reversed and the Rebpublicans were the heroes. There is NO ROOM FOR POLITICS in Austen like novels!

I was on vacation, hoping to forget the awful politics of both the left and the right. What a disappointment to read this trash in what I had hoped would be a great beach read. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! Can I get a refund??????

Loved this book! A must read for romantics at heart.

I came across this book because of the ties to Pride and Prejudice, my all time favorite book. I have read many sequels and such that are not all that great. This book is great. It is definitely a modern version. The similarity stops at how the main characters feel about one another. That being said it is still a good book. The main characters try to deny their feelings and it only gets them into more trouble. It is a very easy read. I would very much recommend this book!

I absolutely loved this book. If you are a Jane Austen fan this is the book for you.

I absolutely loved this book. After reading it I can't wait for the sequel - according to Website going to be a total set of 4 books set be the sea. I emailed the author and she said her agent has the book and is trying to find a publisher. Different website said to be published in 2010

If you are a Jane Austen fan, this is the book for you. Good strong charcters, good plot and happy ending. After I read it through twice, I ordered a copy for my daughter. I also found other books by the same author - variations on Pride and Prejudice - what if ... changing the story by a different choice and certain key points. Also good but have to be a true Jane fan to understand all the nuances.

Nice enjoyable light romance with a tribute to Darcy and Elizabeth

I agree with the one reviewer that it is enjoyable but not really a Jane Austin thing and the ending is a bit drawn out...But where does the other reviewer get trashy? On the sex level it was pretty mild. The story kept me interested and the writing was good. I would try another book by this author.

    Unexpectedly raunchy

I was expecting a lot more from this book. Unfortunately, it is like a trashy romance novel. If you are into that kind of thing, you will probably enjoy it. But if you are a Jane Austin fan, this is not for you.
