Overview

After a hiatus from the ice to get his grades back up to eligibility level, Jeff Connors returns to get the cold shoulder treatment from his teammates. During Jeff's absence, a threatening note was discovered in his best friend's locker—written in Jeff's hand. His protests of innocence fall on deaf ears, so Jeff is on his own to discover who's behind the sabotage.

Jeff, already worried about losing his place on the hockey team because of low grades, suddenly finds himself the victim of sabotage in the form of forged papers.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-6In addition to being worried about losing his place on the hockey team because of a low English grade, Jeff becomes a victim of sabotage. He is shocked when Kevin, his best friend, receives a cruel note in Jeff's handwriting. To make matters worse, Jeff gets another low grade on his English paper even after correcting his mistakes with his tutor. He soon discovers that a teammate has been forging his handwriting. Christopher uses straightforward sentence structure and a simple vocabulary. Characters show positive yet realistic valuesJeff in dreading the tutor but knowing he needs help and the culprit in admitting his guilt. The mystery progresses quickly, provides clues that lead to more than one suspect, and reaches a satisfying conclusion. Some readers may not guess the ending, but they will feel successful in organizing the clues in their minds. Libraries needing more hockey stories will want to include this one in their collection.Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA
Kirkus Reviews
After a season away from hockey because of slipping grades, Jeff Connors is in trouble again and anxious to keep his place on the team. A tutor helps Jeff shore up his worst grade, in English; under her guidance he begins to see what he's been doing wrong, and comes up with a decent composition that he hopes will redeem him in the eyes of the team and his coach. He and his best friend, Kevin, resolve to work hard to help the team win the title, and everything looks rosy. Then Kevin finds a nasty note in his locker that looks as if it were written by Jeff, and Jeff gets his English paper back with a failing grade—but it's not the paper he handed in. It's a puzzle, all right, one that befuddles Jeff even though readers who aren't as slow on the uptake as he is will have most of the details figured out. These one-dimensional jocks employ some fairly leaden dialogue on the way to the inevitable happy ending, but not even all those exclamation points can give the book a semblance of excitement.

    Penalty Shot

Penalty Shot Matt Christopher Little, Brown Young Readers Mystery/ sports fiction Do you like action sports? Do you like to solve puzzles? If so the book Penalty Shot is the perfect book for you. There is plenty of action on the ice and also there is a mystery to be solved. When Jeff was kicked off the hockey team last year for bad grades he is really mad and told him self to do better next year. The one thing is, Jeff¿s best friend Kevin got a note that looked like it was from Jeff. Also his composition that he has been working on with his tutor was replaced with one that was his rough draft, it looks like Jeff's friendship with Kevin and also jeff¿s hockey season could be over. To find out if Jeff gets kicked off the hockey team and if he gets to keep his best friend read Penalty Shot by Matt Christopher Jeff, the main character in the story, is a dynamic protagonist character that is a very good hockey player. Jeff has trouble in english class, he also isn't the biggest fan of dogs. Jeff¿s best friend Kevin is a dynamic character that can be both antagonist and protagonist. Kevin is on the same hockey team as Jeff. He is a very good friend to Jeff (at some points in the story), Kevin unlike Jeff is a big fan of dogs and has one named Ranger. Another kid on the hockey team is Sam, he is a static protagonist that is an alternate on the hockey team the reason for this is that Sam came to the school too late to tryout for the hockey team. Otherwise Sam would be on the first line and would get more playing time than moat of the other kids on the hockey team. Bucky is a dynamic antagonist character that picks on his brother and Jeff. He is also on the hockey team and is on the same line as Jeff. The book Penalty Shot is a good book that should be read by all hockey players who like books that they can relate to. Penalty Shot is a book that has plenty of action and mystery solving and you feel like you are in the middle of all that is happening in the book. Can you find out who is sabotaging Jeff before he gets kicked off the hockey team and looses his best friend? Read Penalty Shot to solve the mystery.
