Overview

Pence is the story of a small boy carved out of a potato with all the wrong proportions of courage and common sense, a big ego, and an even bigger mouth.

Overview

Pence is the story of a small boy carved out of a potato with all the wrong proportions of courage and common sense, a big ego, and an even bigger mouth.

With a rock for a brain, a pair of emeralds for eyes, and a rare seed pressed into his chest that beats with a pulse, Pence awakens his first morning with grandiose ambitions but he is quickly brought down to earth by the old man who made him, who sternly tasks the boy with an impossible quest and then kicks him out of the garden with no more than a splinter for a sword and a copper penny for a shield.

Pence does not appreciate having his life charted out for him, but a boy cannot outrun his own heart. Whether he likes it or not, Pence was made for a reason. He is the gardener’s last hope.

Meet the Author

My Lifelong Mission is to become the Greatest Fantasy Author Since Tolkien (or Lewis, on Sundays.) Fingers crossed, I hope to write and illustrate a new book each year until I get arthritis.I am only five books behind schedule.Good news! The Universe is expanding: there will always be room on your shelf for another good book. And if you should happen to run out of space, that is a great reason to buy another bookshelf—and *that* is a great reason to buy more books. When I am a nutty old hermit in a few years, I want to look at my top shelf and see a rainbow of book spines that flow into one another, telling each other’s stories while never touching, each giving weight to the worlds of its neighbors even if the characters are as far apart as the stars. My first book, Riverlilly, is a love letter to magic, deeply rooted in fairy tales, fables, and our aforementioned Masters of Classic Fantasy Goodness. If you like words arranged on paper that tell a story, look no further. My second book, Pence, is a morbid, absurd story about a boy carved out of a potato with all the wrong proportions of courage and common sense, a big ego, and an even bigger mouth. Every time I read it, Pence makes me laugh.Check out each book’s page for full descriptions and extra info.More art for Riverlilly and Pence is up on my Facebook. My third book will be available Autumn 2014—buy that extra bookshelf today!J.
