At an end-of-London-season soirée, the young Hungarian scholar-dilettante Janos Bátky is introduced to the Earl of Gwynedd, a reclusive eccentric who is the subject of strange rumors. Invited to the family seat—Pendragon Castle in North Wales—Bátky receives a mysterious phone call warning him not to go; but he does and finds himself in a bizarre world of mysticism and romance, animal experimentation, and planned murder. His quest to solve the central mystery takes him down strange byways—old libraries and warehouse cellars, Welsh mountains, and underground tombs.

This is probably the best fiction on the Rosicrucian and Occult theme, actually only half fiction with many historical references, so you will find it also very useful as a first resource into the study of the origins of the Rosicrucian age '16th c.', all the while following the adventures of a biedermayer doctor, who is a lot more at home in a Budapest coffe house than in the dark ruins of a Welsh castle. Szerb was a master of mystique and genuinely educated on the subject, no doubt. Very strongly recommended for fans of grand-thrillers of the style of 'Vidoq' or 'Sleepy Hollow'. Unfortunately the cover of this edition does not do justice to the book, this is a grand European novel from the 1930-s.
