Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The team behind the Gaspard and Lisa series introduces Penelope at School by Anne Gutman, illus. by Georg Hallensleben. This preschool adventure (on heavy-duty cardstock) stars a blue koala. By pulling red tabs, kids can help Penelope hang up her coat, feed the fish and more. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
This charming tale of a little blue mouse named Penelope improves with additional readings. It is a movable book, which is to say various kinds of motions are possible by pulling tabs and, in one case, turning a wheel; and the actions are perfectly suited to the text as it describes spending a day in nursery school. Penelope puts on and takes off her coat; she has playtime inside and out with friends; she helps to celebrate a classmate's birthday by watching as he blows out his three candles; she feeds the fish and erases the blackboard. All the tabs are clearly marked with arrows indicating which way the tab should be moved and the resulting actions are sometimes surprising, but always fun. The painting scene is particularly pleasing because the action of the wheel illustrates how mixing two other colors together can make a new color. 2003, Scholastic, Ages 3 to 5.
