Children's Literature
Here is another book in the "Magic Tree House Research Guide" series. The title is a bit misleading, as much more is covered than just the penguins who inhabit Antarctica. In fact, four of the six chapters deal with other topics. These include the history and geography of Antarctica, animal life, explorers of the continent, and current activities at the site. Two children named Jack and Annie appear throughout the book as students are learning facts and being guided through an abundance of information presented in straightforward, easily-understood prose. Black and white illustrations and photos are an excellent addition to the text, providing visual appeal and unifying the work. Other sources of information in the book include a bibliography, a list of audiovisual materials, a list of zoos and aquariums where penguins are housed, and a list of web sites to visit. This is sure to be a useful book for youngsters undertaking research, as well as those who are interested in penguins and Antarctica. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
Children's Literature
While this nonfiction resource can stand alone as a wealth of information for the elementary crowd, it is also a welcome addition to the experience of reading Eve of the Emperor Penguin # 40 in the "Magic Tree House" series. This book takes the experiences of Jack and Annie from MTH and explores them more fully. This guide, which is engaging right from the start, covers all of the elements touched upon in the story but breaks them down and expands the scope of the information presented to provide a real and clear picture of life in Antarctica. Topics include history, animals, explorers, and modern day life. While this book provides much information, it also encourages further inquiry both through its friendly format and also by providing a useful list of alternative resources to be used for further study. This is a nice addition to the story and would be very useful particularly in a thematic/unit type of study. Reviewer: Trina Heidt

Meet the Author

MARY POPE OSBORNE and NATALIE POPE BOYCE are sisters who grew up on army posts all over the world. They are working on more Magic Tree House® Fact Tracker books to give Magic Tree House readers facts and information about places, time periods, and animals that Jack and Annie discover in the Magic Tree House adventures.

Mary lives in Connecticut. Natalie makes her home nearby in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. Mary is the author of all the Magic Tree House fiction titles as well as many more books for kids.

SAL MURDOCCA has illustrated more than 200 children's trade and text books. He is also a librettist for children'sopera, a video artist, an avid runner, hiker, and bicyclist, and a teacher of children's illustration at the Parsons School of Design. Sal lives and works in New York with his wife, Nancy.
