Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cindy K. Schofield
In cold seas off Antarctica far in the southern hemisphere to as far north as the Galapagos Islands penguins are diving and swimming through the water, but the sleek black and white birds never fly. This informational book is a treasure trove of facts and stories about these adorable web-footed birds. The book can be read from cover to cover but the topical spreads of text and photos may be equally well accessed by casually flipping through them and reading content as it jumps off the pages. The book begins with two pages devoted to instructions about how to read it and an invitation to discover even more by downloading a free companion digital book. The instructions point out that while each two page spread is different; they are all organized in the same way. There is an introduction to the topic, labels for elements in the photographs, captions that further describe the subject and small text that provides more detail about the pictures. A data box provides information and statistics about specific penguin types and a "find out more" note guides the reader to another page with related information. An "under threat" exclamation highlights endangered penguins and leads to a chapter about penguin protection and environmental education. The table of contents follows the unusual introduction to the book's design format. The eighty page book is made up of two-page chapters about penguin habitat, behavior, appearance, and threats of extinction. Seventeen specific species are described in detail interspersed with chapters that discuss information common to all of them such as anatomy, breeding, nesting, and behavioral characteristics. The life cycle of an emperor penguin is described in detail from egg to adult and an interview with a penguin photographer adds interesting perspective from someone who has observed the birds up close in dire conditions. The comprehensive index provides access to the wide array of information and the photos throughout provide unique images of all aspects of penguin life. At the start of the book a web address and code are provided for downloading a digital companion book. The digital book requires Adobe Reader. It is entitled Amazing Antarctica and has information about penguins and other creatures that make Antarctica home. The e-book is navigated with clicks on pictures and headings and includes some animated content as well as text and photographs. The digital book bonus is a nice extra but the printed book stands on its own as an excellent addition to any child's collection or the shelves of school and public libraries. Part of the "Scholastic Discover More" series. Reviewer: Cindy K. Schofield
