    This is a terrific whodunit

Tired J.O.S.H.U.A. Foundation attorney Callie Webber, after giving a $300,000 grant to Transition Resources, flies home from Chicago to DC. On the flight the widow calls her boss Tom the philanthropist whom she never met. After he lectures her for trading in her first class ticket for coach, Tom assigns her to travel to Philadelphia to give $250,000 to his family friend Wendell Smythe's Feed the Need cause.

Callie arrives at Smythe's office to deliver the cheek in person, but finds the recipient dead. She notifies a stunned Tom who asks her, as a former private detective, to investigate the murder. Callie moves into Smythe's home to investigate his homicide; only to find the victim's family uncooperative and she fears dangerous.

This is a terrific whodunit filled with twists and a hint of romance though Callie and Tom have never met in person. The story line is fast-paced from the first grant to the final denouement. Adding depth to the strong mystery is the thirtyish heroine, still grieving the loss of her spouse, her quiet faith in God and the profound look at not for profit groups that will have the audience ponder the ethics of the end justifies the mean.

Highly recommended mystery in Christian Fiction - a must read!

Clark has created a believable and all-too-human character in Callie Webber, investigator for the J.O.S.H.U.A. Foundation. In this first book in the series, Callie finds herself in the middle of the murder of the grant recipient. Callie is, also, working through the 3 year old tragic death of her beloved husband. Realistic characters, excellent mystery, and light Christian fiction combine in a page-turning read.

Great beginning of a great series!

Wow! If you're looking for a well written, suspenseful story that carries a hint of the romance we like but none of the vulgarity or explicit sex found in most "best-sellers"--this is the book for you. Clark knows how to keep you interested and intrigued. Good characters, good plot, good Christian values. And I couldn't wait to read the next book in the series!

    Great Mystery

I have read all of the books in this series before ebooks were even around. 90% of what I read is christian suspense and mystery. Believe me when I say I have read over 100 books in the last 3 years and this is one of the best mystery and suspense series I have read.

Callie Webber has a job she loves. Experienced as a private inv

Callie Webber has a job she loves. Experienced as a private investigator and attorney, she is now employed by the J.O.S.H.U.A. Foundation to investigate the integrity, including financial activity, of nonprofit organizations in which her philanthropist boss is interested. He then decides whether to make donations, often very substantial, based on her
recommendations. Oddly enough, Callie and her boss, Tom, have never actually met but they have developed a strong rapport and a feeling of mutual trust over the phone.

Working for the foundation gives Callie a sense of making a real contribution to society and enhances her faith in Christ. It also keeps her so busy she has little time to dwell on the sudden and gruesome death of her husband although she treasures her quiet times in her home on the Chesapeake. Thus, she is looking forward to returning home when Tom asks her to make one more day trip first, to deliver a check to an old friend’s hunger relief organization.

What promises to be an easy errand soon turns into something a bit more involved. Tom’s friend dies, almost in front of Callie, and it becomes apparent that the cause is probably murder. Tom asks Callie to stay and investigate on behalf of his friend. Unfortunately, it’s not long before Callie realizes her own life may well be in danger and very few of the victim’s family and co-workers can be trusted. Solving this murder may carry a very high price.

A Penny for Your Thoughts is the first of the Million Dollar Mysteries by Mindy Starns Clark. Billed as an “inspirational” or “religious” mystery, the touch of faith is lightly done and comes across quite naturally and unobtrusively rather than being heavyhanded as some religious novels can be. Callie is a refreshingly intelligent and resourceful woman, eminently likable, while Tom is an enigma. Who is this man besides being very wealthy and undoubtedly generous? When will he and Callie meet? What, if anything, will happen when they do?

The author has really piqued my interest with this first entry and I’m looking forward to the next, as much for the puzzles surrounding Tom, as for Callie’s sleuthing adventures. It’s nice to have a new mystery series with a well-constructed plot in addition to good character development, a combination not every author can accomplish.

I started reading Ms Clark with the Whispering Bayou book and had to find others by her.
Read the last of this Callie Webber series first at our public library and had to go and start reading the series from the first with this book.

    Good suspense story!

This first book in the Million dollar series is well written and suspenseful. The idea of never meeting an employer made for a lot of possible whys. If you like to read a good mystery, I highly recommend this book for your own personal library.

    A penny well spent

I had enjoyed Mindy's SmartChick series so I wanted to go back and read the rest of her books. I had heard really good things about this series, and boy I was not not disappointed. This was a top-notch mystery with a strong, hard to put down storyline. I love Callie's character, she is strong and very resourceful. She's good at noticing the tiny details which is probably why she was a PI. The reader also feels for her as she is a young widow after losing her husband only recently. Tom is a mysterious guy and if I had been in Callie's shoes I would have done some inspecting on him! The idea of the company is very cool, giving to those who deserve it but don't ask for it. I also found it very interesting about what was said about the exploiting of sponsoring children. It is true that most people do not find water irrigation very attractive to spend money on, but they will spend money to help a cute kid, so thus pictures of the kid is reused to attract people. So the people's money goes towards water irrigation but they think it's helping the kid. Is it deceiving for companies to do this, especially if they are Christian based? Why do people feel good if they help a kid, but they think it's wasteful to help an entire community? Very good stuff to think about. Overall this was an excellent mystery story with twists I didn't see coming and likable characters making this book a great start to the series. I'm hooked.

    good read

I finsihed this book yesterday and I really liked it. I enjoyed the mystery and suspence of the book. The main character works for a man she has never met, and that alone intrigued me. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. All the titles are so catchy.

    A real page turner!

'A Penny for Your Thoughts' is the first of the Million Dollar Mystery Series by Mindy Starns Clark. I had a hard time putting it down! The plots moved quickly and kept me turning the pages! If you enjoy Mary Higgins Clark you will also enjoy this book. I definitely will be reading the other books in the series.
