Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Penny Ryder discovers some surprises when she goes to spend the summer with her grandparents. First, she meets Pepper the horse, and then she meets the twin neighbors, Tom and Tina Granger. One day, the three children discover that Pepper is not in the yard where he is supposed to be. They follow the clues to his whereabouts, and then learn that Pepper has solved his own mystery. Betancourt leads the reader through the mystery by specifically pointing out and naming the clues. The short chapters, repetition, and plentiful full-color illustrations are just right for the beginning reader who is ready for a bit more story but still wants lots of illustration. Girls may be attracted to the descriptions of Penny's pink swirly skirt and purple shoes with satin bows. This is the first in a new series called "Pony Mysteries" and it is a Scholastic Reader Level 3 book. A double-page map of the farm can be found at the beginning and again at the end of the book. My daughter loves everything to do with horses and this book is a great one for her to practice reading aloud to us in the evenings. Still entertaining after several months.

A great early reader focusing on family and friends, a farm, and special animals all wrapped up in a mystery where the reader can follow the clues to the happy ending. The story is interesting and encourages a child to keep reading and learning to the end.

My daughter loved this book. She is a horse lover. Good for the child that is starting chapter books.
