Chapter One

There was a little girl name Penny. She had a beautiful smile, and everybody loved her.

Penny had a cat that she loved very much. She named her Candy because the cat loved to eat chocolate candy. No one she knew had ever seen a cat eat candy.

Candy also did tricks. When Penny told her to lie down and play sleep, she would lie down and close her eyes. When she told her to roll over, she would lie on her side and roll over.

Candy was a pretty, brown cat with gray eyes. All of the children loved to see her do her tricks and eat candy.

Penny had a bike with a basket in front of it. She would put Candy in the basket with a pretty blue ribbon around her neck, and off they went, riding down the street.

Everyone wanted to play with Candy and watch her do her tricks. Candy loved every minute of it. She enjoyed being the star of the show. Sometimes Candy would get so carried away, Penny would have to pick her up and put her back in the basket.

One day the family went on a picnic. They took Candy along with them. She had such a good time, running and playing around in the grass. She finally stretched out and went to sleep.

Everyone was sitting around the table, talking, eating, and listening to soft music when they heard a loud noise coming from over in the grass. They all jumped up and ran over to see what was going on.

Penny got there first. She thought something had happened to Candy.

There was a little dog standing there, shaking his head, as if he had been hit with something. Candy stood there with a hump in her back as if she was ready to attack again. Everybody started to laugh. The little dog ran back down the hill, looking as if he was embarrassed. They could not stop laughing.

One day something sad happened. Penny and Candy crossed the street. Penny thought that Candy was right behind her, but she had gone back out in the street. Penny heard car tires screeching. She looked back to see Candy going up in the air.

So Penny turned around and ran back toward Candy. A neighbor stopped her from running out in front of a car. Penny could see Candy lying out in the middle of the street, and she was not moving. Penny started to scream.

Penny's mother heard her screaming and came out to see what was wrong. The neighbor that kept Penny from running out in the street told her what happened. Penny's mother took her daughter in her arms and carried her inside.

Penny cried for the rest of the day. She felt like she had lost her best friend. For days she wouldn't eat. She didn't want to talk to anyone. She just wanted to be left alone.

Penny's father and mother began to worry about her. She wasn't the same little girl with the beautiful smile anymore. She didn't even want to ride her bike. All she did was cry.
