Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As part of Capstone Press's "First Facts on American Symbols" series, this non-fiction picture book focuses upon the United State's military headquarters, including its near destruction in 2001. The book does not sugar-coat the reality of September 11, but positively softens the blow by presenting a sense of renewal, hope, and safety. It is an excellent vehicle for discussion regarding terrorism, destruction, and death. Starting with how and why the Pentagon came about, a history of this unique building fills the pages with matching illustration and photos. Along the way, interesting fun facts pepper the pages, such as the construction of the Pentagon started exactly 60 years to the day prior to the tragic plane crash. This concise volume shows a picture of the aftermath of the crash, and then a picture of security guards keeping this national symbol of defense safe. The illustration of a planned memorial creates a positive image of remembrance. The end section includes an activity on how to build a Pentagon out of straws, a glossary, a list of book references, and an Internet site for further research. In terms of classroom use, this book can be used for units on American history studies, terrorism, grief, or even building construction. 2004, Capstone Press, Ages 5 to 8.
