The conflicts inherent in the Chinese and Jewish temperament are delicately and intricately traced with profound wisdom and delicate understanding in this tale... This is an enchanting story, the theme of which is tolerance. Highly recommended. --Library Journal

    Exceptional!!

It was just soooo good! Peony was a really interesting character, very energetic, she never thought about herself first... It was my first book by Mrs. Buck and I want to read others!! I learned a lot about the Chinese culture but also about the Jewish culture there, which seems very different from here.

    I understand...

Reading this book, helped me understand why my grandmother loved it so much. This book has excellent history, and an insight to a world we can not possibly understand, I am like Peony in many ways: 19, in love with a good friend who will never love me, and full of curiousity. I loved this book, and would recomend it to anyone, like she and David, I have been able to rekindle old friendships lost, and start new ones as my life progresses.

PEARL BUCK WAS RAISED IN CHINA!

MAYBE THE REASON WHY IT SEEMED TO REAL WAS BECAUSE SHE WAS RAISED IN CHINA, DESPITE THE FACT THAT SHE WAS INDEED AMERICAN. SHE MOVED TO VIRGINIA WITH HER FAMILY WHEN SHE WAS YOUNG AND MOVED BACK TO CHINA LATER WHERE SHE MET HER HUSBAND AS WELL AS COLLECTED EXPERIENCES THAT SHE WOULD LATER USE IN HER FIRST BOOK, THE GOOD EARTH. WHICH BY THE WAY, IS AN AMAZING NOVEL. JUST THOUGHT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW...

The Greatest Book of all time~

I believe that this book was outstanding.I never wanted to put this book down,it was that great!!!Even though Mrs.Buck had never been to China she still made the book seem real, as though she was brought up there.I would recomend this book to my 13year old daughter-she will understand it.

    PEONY is remarkable!

In a lot of ways I could relate to the character Peony. Except she is a chinese bondmaid and I'm an American college student. But in ways, we can all relate to any character in a book. It is an amazing story that has made my knowledge increase of the Chinese and Jews in China. I may even want to major in Eastern Asian Studies.

    Loved it!!!

I asked my English teacher what book she would recommend. This is the one she told me to check into. I'm so glad she did! I simply loved this story. The imagination Mrs. Buck had in her writing was amazing. It started off a little slow but that's how most stories are. I loved Peony's personality. She knew how to act to get what she wanted and she knew how to keep things the way she wanted them. It was an excellent book. I can't wait to read more of Pearl S. Buck's novels. Peony is absolutely the first novel I have truly enjoyed. :)
