School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Although it is gratifying to have a current, expanded version of the typical "state" books, the uneven quality of these two titles suggests that not all of the entries in this series are of equal worth. Ansary presents an overview of the various ethnic groups that inhabit California, as well as a brief history of population trends over the years. Information on the different groups is random and inconsistent-some (Latinos) are presented on several pages, while others (Southeast Asians) are covered in a brief paragraph. Short biographies of 70 "California Achievers" range from the earliest explorers to modern athletes and actors; unfortunately, only a few of the individuals are pictured. By contrast, Feinstein's title presents an excellent introduction to California's Native peoples, from prehistoric times to the present. History, daily life, and culture (given the large number of tribes, loosely organized by geographic proximity) are addressed in the first half of the book; the second half is devoted to "outside influences" from the Spanish missionaries through the modern system of Indian reservations. Both books include good-quality, full-color and archival photos and reproductions.-Sue Morgan, Tom Kitayama Elementary School, Union City, CA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
