To his right were two stately gates of iron fantastically wrought, supported by stone pillars on whose summits stood griffins of black marble embracing coats of arms, and banners inscribed with the device Per ardua ad astra. Beyond these gates ran a broad carriage drive, lined on either side by a double row of such oaks as England alone can produce under the most favourable circumstances of soil, aided by the nurturing hand of man and three or four centuries of time.

Meet the Author

Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was educated at Ipswich School before careers as a colonial administrator in Africa and as a barrister in England. A prolific novelist, many of his stories, such as King Solomon's Mines and She, are set in Africa, and he is notable for portraying African characters sympathetically at a time when this was unusual. His 'lost world' novels influenced Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling and Indiana Jones; he was knighted in 1912.

    Disappointing

    Love the story, I've read it before. Unfortunately this version has so many letters missing and words mixed up it is unreadable.

    I don't know how this book is because it is not readable. Letters are all scrambled. Waste of my time downloading it.

    WHAT A STORY!

    WHEN I FIRST READ THIS BOOK IT WAS MISSING ABOUT TWENTY PAGES,AND I LOOKED HARD FOR MONTHS TIL I FOUND IT AND IT TURNED ME ON TOO MOST OF HIS NOVELS. IN THIS BOOK YOU CAN'T HELP BUT LOVE THAT KING TO BE OTTER. I BELIEVE HAGGARD KNEW T.V AND MOVIES WHERE ON THE WAY, BECAUSE THIS WOULD BE A GREAT MOVIE OR MINI-SERIES.
