Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
This volume of the encyclopedia-like "Peoples and Cultures of Africa" series addresses the major organizations and nation states that exist across the African continent. Each nation in Africa is presented in its own individual essay. In addition, international organizations, environmental groups, and leading personalities are also presented in this information-packed and illustrated work. Of particular noteworthiness is the way in which keynote and controversial points are presented in an evenhanded yet critically minded manner. For example, the longstanding history of dictatorship that has plagued many African nations is synopsized by the various writers of this publication in a way that helps youngsters better understand not only the factual history of such governance but also its human cost. Further, the rising awareness yet stagnant interventions that various governments and agencies have undertaken in response to the African AIDS epidemic is another example of the insightfulness of the writers of this text. In the end this is a solid resource compendium that should find a useful place in either a classroom or individual library.
