Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Pepe and Papa load a basket of chile peppers on their burro and head for the market. "No, no! Poor Pepe!" exclaims a man whose own son is atop his burro. So Papa loads the chiles on his head, places Pepe on the burro and continues onward. As they progress down the road, others exclaim over their riding arrangements, until finally Papa places Pepe and the peppers on the hapless burro, and attempts to carry them all on his back. Of course, they all tumble, but the story ends happily with Pepe, Papa and the burro riding to market in the back of a neighbor's truck. Part of the "Road to Reading" series, this is a "Mile 1" book designed for beginning readers. The story is told through visual clues and simple sentences. ("Chiles on bushes. /Chiles in basket. /Basket on burro. /To market we go.") The bright watercolor illustrations show the characters dressed in colorful, modern clothing that adds a contemporary twist to this traditional "tale of the sillies." 2001, Golden Books, $11.99 and $3.99. Ages 4 to 6. Reviewer: Cherri Jones
