Overview

PEPITA TALKS TWICE/Pepita habla dos veces is a charming story about a young girl who learns the value of being bilingual. A brightly illustrated, bilingual picture book, Pepita Talks Twice/Pepita habla dos veces depicts an active young girl's frustration at being stopped constantly to translate for neighbors, relatives and classmates. Her decision to stop speaking Spanish leads to problems she had not anticipated, including not being able to communicate with her beloved grandmother who speaks only Spanish and with her dog Lobo, who refuses to come to her when she calls him by his English name, Wolf. It is only when Lobo's life is in danger that she comes to fully appreciate the value of her bilingual skills.

Pepita Talks Twice/Pepito habla dos veces will delight both English- and Spanish-speakers and give them insight into the value of speaking two languages. Both dialogue and illustrations are delightful in capturing the full flavor of biculturalism.

Pepita, a little girl who can converse in Spanish and English, decides not to "speak twice" until unanticipated problems cause her to think twice about her decision.

Editorial Reviews

Criticas
PreS-Gr 2-A third grader grows tired of constantly having to translate from English to Spanish and back for everyone in the neighborhood. One day she decides the solution is to speak only one language-English! This solution has unexpected consequences and leads Pepita to discover all the ways that being bilingual enriches her life and makes her a better person. This is an excellent choice for students experiencing similar situations and for classroom teachers looking for a writing prompt. A book that students will enjoy rereading all year long.

Pepita is tired of people who ask for her help because she can speak both Spanish and English. She wants to get home before her brother Juan so she can teach her dog Lobo a new trick. Therefore, she decides she no longer will speak Spanish. However, she later realizes the importance of speaking two languages when she must use Spanish to save Lobo's life. The story, with its text in both English and Spanish, will delight children who speak either language.
